Job Summary:
The Senior Manager of Data Journalism is responsible for running a first of its kind local data journalism team for ABC's Owned Television Stations, with the goal of infusing high-impact data journalism into ABC's newsrooms and content. This role will be responsible for supporting the strategic development of the data journalism team, identifying and managing key hires, forging strategic partnerships in the data journalism space, and educating the organization about data journalism. This role requires practical data journalism experience, strong leadership skills and established relationships within and awareness of the data journalism industry, as well as a passion for local news.
*Flexible to location within NY, LA, SF, Chicago, Philadelphia or Houston.
Responsibilities:
• Help to define the strategy and implementation of OTV's data journalism team and fellowship program
• Assess key hires and recruit talent
• Create and implement workflows for implementing day to day data journalism practices as well as to support long term investigations
• Bring data journalism to life in visual formats that work for television
• Monitor industry trends around local news and data journalism field
• Network and proactively seek out relationships with key leaders and vendors in the field
• Drive division-wide data journalism initiatives and coverage
• Pursue and establish strategic partnerships to support OTV's data journalism efforts
• Proactive relationships with universities, non profits and technology companies at the forefront of data journalism
• Educate the organization on data journalism
• Create training curriculums
• Coordinate with key stakeholders
• Incorporate existing expertise within the organization into data journalism team and fellowship
• Manage a team of data journalism fellows, in coordination with local news editorial teams
• Coordinate closely with all of OTV's newsroom leadership
• Direct and support the development of the in-house team
Basic Qualifications:
• Hands-on, practical experience doing data journalism in a newsroom environment with specific work samples, including identifying key data sets, evaluating and cleaning data, and finding stories within data
• Comprehensive understanding of the growing data journalism field with existing relationships in the data journalism and media industry
• Interest in and awareness of local news space and/or media industry trends
• Highly organized, action-oriented and collaborative
• Strong leader who can champion projects across groups and build strong relationships with other team members
• Self-starter, ambitious and motivated with a strong work ethic
• Critical thinking and analytic skills; ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects
• Excellent communication, negotiation and presentation skills
• Detail-oriented and focused on accuracy
• Proficient in MS Office Suite: Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint
Preferred Qualifications:
• Coding ability a plus but not required
• Experience building a team from the ground up
• 5 years working in the news / media industry, preferably local
• Experience working in a video or television news environment
• Strong journalistic instincts and story-sense
• Data Journalism degree a plus
Required Education
• BA and/or equivalent experience
