Unique opportunity for an Attorney with expertise in the Music Business and/or Brand Extension Licensing to work with a solid team of professionals in a dynamic company.
Rhino Entertainment is the catalog division of Warner Music Group responsible for U.S. catalog repertoire on a global basis, and also a full service record label engaged in new releases and exciting new initiatives. Level/title of role to be determined based on experience.
This position reports to the SVP, Business & Legal Affairs and offers a music-loving environment in which to focus on a variety of commercial agreements including merchandising, trademark and brand licensing, rights of publicity, and live theatrical partnerships.
The Director / Vice President will manage certain key business affairs functions in connection with Rhino's multifaceted brand and artist relationships with the Frank Sinatra Estate, the Grateful Dead and the Monkees. The Director / Vice President will also handle traditional music industry agreements related to the revitalization of existing catalog through deals with WMG's legacy artists.
Director / Vice President will have the opportunity to interface directly with Rhino senior management and to assist in the supervision and training of junior members of the Business Affairs department.
Detailed Job Description/ Responsibilities:
Execute on strategy for the expansion and maintenance of celebrity and brand IP portfolios, including trademarks, photographs, video footage, music copyrights and rights of publicity.
Negotiate and draft agreements in context of merchandising, licensing, endorsements and theatrical productions. Handle agency agreements and direct to consumer fulfillment agreements
Monitor trademark compliance and enforcement, and manage outside counsel.
Negotiate and draft recorded music agreements including recording agreements, producer agreements, distribution agreements, joint ventures, soundtracks and cast album agreements, audio/video master use licenses, finished goods agreements and video production agreements.
Manage ongoing contractual relationships and handling business affairs matters for catalogue artists and company partners.
Render general business and legal advice to departments within the company, including identifying and addressing legal and business issues that arise from product development plans.
Review and clear creative material, including program content for video exploitation, audio releases and related marketing materials
Research and interpret existing contracts
Review royalty statements, and work with audit team on claims.
Other general legal matters, particularly related to intellectual property rights
Such other duties as reasonably may be required
Required Competencies/Skills:
J.D. or equivalent, plus admission to the California and/or New York state bars
4-10+ years of focused transactional experience in Merchandising, Brand Licensing, and/or the Recorded Music Industry (law firm and/or in-house experience)
Strong working knowledge of trademark, right of publicity and/or copyright law.
Strong drafting/writing skills
Manage high volume of projects with precision
Demonstrated ability to work independently within a team-oriented environment
Knowledge and appreciation of catalog music and legacy artists is helpful
Understanding of streaming music rights and the DMCA is helpful
