Full Time Job
This role will primarily focus on structuring, drafting and negotiating high-level, complex agreements for unscripted and reality original television programming, events and tentpoles for BET Networks, VH1 and Logo, with an emphasis on music programming. Day-to-day business and legal affairs services shall primarily include, without limitation, the following:
• Structuring, drafting and negotiating deal terms, deal memos and longform agreements with various above-the-line talent including, musical artists, producers, production services entities, performers and television participants.
• Working with Music Strategy, Music and Media Licensing and Music Services groups to devise music strategy for music-based programming, events and tentpoles.
• Counseling and interacting with various internal departments (e.g., Development, Event Production, Production Management, Music & Media Licensing, Labor & Employment, Risk Management, Intellectual Property and Litigation, Accounting/Finance, Digital, Press/Publicity, Brand Marketing-Creative and Integrated Marketing) on a wide variety of business and legal matters, including deal structures, intellectual property rights, legal issues relating to the physical production of the channel’s programming (including the implementation of legal and network policies and procedures), risk management, insurance matters, marketing, promotions and product integrations.
• Performing other day-to-day business and legal affairs-related tasks and oversight as needed and assigned by the department’s senior Business and Legal Affairs executives including vetting proposed production plans and overseeing production legal services on third party productions.
Basic Qualifications
7 years of relevant experience (including significant law firm experience and/or experience in a business and/or legal affairs department at a major label, major music publishing company, major studio and/or network), with a heavy emphasis on music entertainment experience. Qualified candidates must be members in good standing of the New York Bar.
Additional Qualifications
• Possess excellent negotiating, drafting, and analytical, interpersonal, organizational, prioritizing and time management skills while covering a high-volume workload.
• Possess extensive knowledge of the entertainment industry including: customary industry parameters; common legal issues and solutions involved in successfully completing transactions; in-depth knowledge regarding the production of television programming and the exploitation of ancillary rights related thereto; union and non-union labor and employment law issues; intellectual property law; risk management issues, rights of publicity/privacy issues.
• Ability to professionally and confidently interact with senior level staff in the client group and generate strong client satisfaction through firm decision-making.
• Ability to communicate effectively with agents, attorneys and other business affairs executives while building strong industry relationships.
• Ability to rapidly absorb information and conform to existing business practices while simultaneously offering innovative solutions to improve efficiency and client satisfaction.
