What does our department do?
- The Program Acquisitions team is responsible for the licensing of all off-network content - including feature films and syndicated series - for the entire portfolio of Turner entertainment networks, services and platforms. Think Big Bang Theory on TBS, classic and arthouse films on FilmStruck and TCM, Hawaii 5-O, Bones and Castle on TNT or any of the blockbuster movies you might see across our brands...
- We are an external, client-facing department; staff works directly with executives from the major Hollywood studios to negotiate terms of licensing including broadcast windows, runs, license fees, distribution and TV Everywhere / on demand rights.
- Acquisitions also works closely with the Programming department - to target the best and most appropriate content to license based on brand and network directionality, the Finance team - to establish budgets and targeted price points for our acquisitions and the Turner Legal group - to draft contracts memorializing the deals that are done. The acquisition process also often demands collaboration with other internal groups such as Marketing, Ad Sales, Research and On-Air, among others.
What will you be doing?
- Our intern will participate in various facets of the content acquisition cycle (depending upon what we have in progress at the time), but will concentrate on historical analysis and future-looking research, helping us to achieve the highest level of awareness and preparedness before entering the negotiation process.
- To ensure that we get the best terms and most comprehensive rights grant for our platforms and programmers, we look both backward to past acquisitions and forward to future needs during our initial assessment of content. Historical analysis and future-looking research can include anything from evaluation and monitoring of the broadcast, cable and SVOD markets - to help to determine what series and films are available for us to acquire - to tracking major happenings within our competitive landscapes - to determine who's buying what, whether TEN is getting the most expansive grant of rights and whether we're in line with what other services are paying for content - to screening and keeping track of submissions - to help to determine what content should be presented for licensing. - Interns who express enthusiasm, reliability and diligence can have opportunities to work on projects above and beyond research and analysis.
