POSITION PURPOSE: The Associate General Counsel establishes goals, objectives, schedules and standards of performance for supervised counsels in the Legal Department. S/he assists the Deputy General Counsel in the coordination and oversight of the prosecution of claims and special projects to ensure enforcement of the collective bargaining agreements through arbitration/litigation and in the handling of litigation and provision of advice and counsel to the Union and its departments and executives. S/he is responsible for the development and articulation of basic institutional policies, project management, and staffing National Board and/or member committees at the direction of the Deputy General Counsel. S/he is responsible for oversight and management of the legal aspects of organizational campaigns.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Supervise, train and assess personnel in the Legal Department as assigned.
• Monitor the delegation of work amongst counsels in the Legal Department and provide advice to the Deputy General Counsel.
• Plan, implement and oversee the development of programs designed to enhance the performance and knowledge of counsels in the Legal Department
• Collaborate on development and updating of Legal Department manuals and policies
• Develop, implement, and maintain consistent protocols for grievance pleadings and negotiations.
• Consult with counsels and provide guidance on specialized issues such as disability, unemployment and workers compensation.
• Coordinate and oversee litigation and grievance handling/arbitration activities of assigned counsels.
• Manage and handle a caseload comprised of high priority complex cases as assigned by the Deputy General Counsel.
• Represent the Union in court and administrative hearings as needed
• Advise and consult with SAG-AFTRA executives, committees, departments and locals on legal matters as necessary.
• Review union communications for legal and policy compliance, as assigned.
• Review, analyze, and approve proposed union activities or events, or refer for consideration by the Deputy General Counsel.
• Provide legal guidance to the union concerning transactions of business involving members, member collective bargaining agreements and union relations with general public.
• Gather and analyze facts and apply appropriate laws, regulations and legal standards to provide legal counsel to the Union and its officers, directors, agents and employees, as assigned.
• Conduct risk assessment and analysis, and identify and recommend opportunities for risk mitigation.
• Attend and support meetings of the National Board, local boards and committees, as assigned.
• Participate in negotiations and drafting of collective bargaining agreements as assigned.
• Liaise with outside counsel at the direction of the Deputy General Counsel and perform legal research as necessary.
• Enforce union rules and Constitution as necessary.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

• Expertise in Labor and Entertainment law is essential. In particular, must possess extensive knowledge of SAG-AFTRA contract provisions and negotiating techniques.
• Able to negotiate with tact and diplomacy
• Superior analytical, advocacy, and mathematical skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to communicate effectively in English, in both verbal and written form.
• Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality of information.
• Able to organize, prioritize and coordinate multiple tasks under daily deadlines.
• Superlative interpersonal skills; high degree of patience and tact. Must be able to cultivate respectful, strategic and collaborative relationships with people from diverse backgrounds, both internally and externally.

• Have an understanding and awareness of worker rights impacting SAG-AFTRA members.

• Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such level as is determined at SAG-AFTRA's sole discretion.
• Must be available and willing to work extended hours (and/or overtime for applicable non-exempt positions) per day or per week, including weekends and holidays, as SAG-AFTRA determines is necessary to meet its business needs.
• Must be available and willing to travel to such locations and with such frequency as SAG-AFTRA determines is necessary or desirable to meet its business needs.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
and/or Experience:
• Graduation from an ABA-accredited law school with a Juris Doctor degree.
• Must have at least four years' litigation and/or binding arbitration experience, or its equivalent.
• Must have knowledge of entertainment union contracts and arbitration process.
• Supervisory or management experience required.
Certificates, licenses, and/or registrations:
• Active membership in the State Bar of New York.
