Runner’s World seeks a talented editor and creative thinker to be its next Associate Fitness & Gear Editor based in its New York City or Emmaus, PA offices. The Associate Editor will be responsible for generating story ideas about training, injury-prevention, and sports psychology across all platforms; working with internal and freelance writers to execute those story ideas; and ensuring that editorial content serves the needs and interests of a running audience that spans from the highly experienced to the novice.
The ideal candidate is a smart, organized, and detail-oriented editor who will be able to manage multiple projects (print and digital) simultaneously, generate clean and engaging copy with limited oversight, and collaborate with the digital and art staffs to frame and package that content to make it accessible and attention-grabbing.
Primary Responsibilities:
• Generate training, injury-prevention, and sports psychology ideas for print and online.
• Work closely with writers, from first draft to published piece, to create clean, engaging copy.
• Occasionally write stories for print and online.
• Cut print pieces to fit in layout and write headlines, subheads, and captions.
• Post digital pieces in our CMS. Write headlines and subheads, insert related links, and follow other digital publishing guidelines.
• Work closely with art and photo departments to determine visual approach to stories.
• Collaborate with and contribute to digital and video teams and other Runner’s World brand extensions/events.
Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, or Communications
• 3 years of experience writing or editing for a mass consumer magazine, website, or digital product
• A passion for the Runner’s World lifestyle, especially training and sports psychology
• Effective communication, collaboration, and time-management skills
Ideal Qualifications:
• Experience covering health and fitness and a good reputation in the running and publishing communities
• Proficiency reading and analyzing scientific studies and translating them into clever, surprising service for a mass consumer audience
• Proven track record of success engaging readers across multiple platforms
• Seasoned assigning editor, line editor, headline writer, and idea generator, with connections to experienced freelance health and fitness writers
• Knowledge of the media landscape at large—including magazines and digital properties beyond our competition
• Diplomatic approach to working with design and photo teams
