Rodale Inc. is currently seeking a Designer with experience in book covers, interiors and book-plus packaging, to join a department of thriving and talented designers. Working both in support of Art Directors and independently, the ideal candidate would be capable of designing books for children and adults on a broad variety of topics, formats, styles, as well as create marketing and collateral materials. This position will be based in New York.
Responsibilities
include:
• Support and execute the design of both 4/c and b&w books for children and adult titles.
• Design sample pages and compose style sheets for layout production.
• Support the visual design and production from inception to finish.
• Present cover design concepts to editorial team.
• Design and manage the production of marketing collateral materials.
• Support the design and production processes.
• Supervise freelancer designers, illustrators and photographers for assigned projects.
• Manage budgets for individual projects.
• Some travel required for photo shoots or press okays.
Ideal candidate will possess:
• BFA in Graphic Design
• 2-4 years experience in children’s and adult book design and layout, both covers and interiors.
• Must have a portfolio which should show ability to apply excellent design skills.
• Strong visual skills including color sense, eye for typography and image selection or creation.
• Understanding and interest of our market (Health and Fitness) and medium.
• Strong organizational skills; flawless attention to detail; budgetary responsibility.
• Ability to take direction and apply own creative skills and talent toward successful execution.
• Experience or desire to art direct and plan photo shoots. Strong interest in photography.
• Expert in industry-standard graphic software: Adobe CS suite, including InDesign, PhotoShop and Illustrator.
• Knowledge of printing process and ability to create die and stamping layers.
• Familiar with graphics for the web and some ability in HTML5–or other digital animation software is a plus.
• Hand-lettering and illustration skills a plus
