Everyone from Mumford and Sons to alt-J, artists on major labels and indies, and festivals around the country including Bonnaroo, Lockn' and Forecastle. Our team works hard to garner the publicity our amazing clients deserve, with placements in print media, online publications, television, and more. Our publicists and staff have diverse tastes and experiences in the music world, and love the company of creative individuals interested in the world of music publicity.
Interns at Big Hassle Media are immersed in the New York office's publicity efforts, working with each publicist on current clients and projects from music research, contact acquisition, reporting, and sometimes even tour pitching. In addition, interns learn important administrative skills in the publicity industry such as press clippings, industry news and important mailings for clients. By the end of an internship, interns should have a full understanding of a press and promotional campaign for an artist or festival and the process in which artists are placed into different press outlets whether on a national or regional basis. Interns will learn the process from video premieres to album reviews, interview scheduling and tour press.
For BHM, an intern would be responsible for organizing; assembling and shipping regularly scheduled mailings of music and information to our most important journalists. This happens every week or two. That includes creating ''one-sheets,'' which are descriptions of each record that gets sent out. They will also be responsible for maintaining a number of different shared documents and keeping them up to date. These documents include dates of shows, release dates of records, contact information for both clients and journalists as well as other information that is important to the company's functions. Intern swill also assemble coverage reports and pitching target lists for different artists. And of course, interns will be a valued source of musical opinions and sounding boards for projects.
An intern's duties may fluctuate and change as the semester progresses, but the above is a general idea of some of the tasks that will be expected.
We're looking for a student who is enthusiastic about the music industry, with a specialized interest in the world of publicity in live music or festivals. We work with bands from all genres, so it's always nice when an intern shares our enthusiasm for the acts that we work with (listed on the Big Hassle website).
An intern should be very computer literate, with knowledge of the basic Microsoft Office programs (mainly Word & Excel). Knowledge of Photoshop is also good, but not required. Owning their own laptop is not required, but they will be able to work on their own computer if it's their preference. They will need to know how to work on a Mac, even if they don't own one.
