POSITION SUMMARY:
Assist the Legal Department’s lawyers in fulfilling the legal affairs and requirements of the corporation.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist the Legal Department’s lawyers in fulfilling the legal affairs and requirements of the corporation. Under attorney supervision, (i) draft and review official rules, prize affidavits/releases and sponsorship agreements relating to ESPN fantasy sports games, sweepstakes, contests and promotions (including ones involving user-generated content) and filing official rules with state regulatory agencies and securing bonds, (ii) review and provide guidance to ESPN’s business units on advertising/marketing materials and rights-related and privacy issues associated with fantasy sports games, sweepstakes, contests and promotions, and (iii) draft, review and analyze television programming agreements and agreements relating to product development and distribution of content via Internet, mobile and other emerging technology products and services.
Expected to (i) negotiate agreements, spot issues and ensure compliance with laws governing fantasy sports games, sweepstakes, contests and promotions, as well as laws governing use of intellectual property in advertising/marketing materials (e,g., trademarks, copyrights and rights of publicity); (ii) handle numerous inquiries from ESPN’s business units regarding fantasy sports games, sweepstakes, contests, promotions, television programming and other digital media agreements on a day-to-day basis; (iii) support special projects; and (iv) assist other paralegals and legal assistants in their tasks as necessary (depending on department workload and priorities).
JOB REQUIREMENTS/EXPERIENCE:
Must be a proactive, self-starter, able to multi-task on a daily basis, and be comfortable operating independently in a busy, fast-paced environment. Position requires five or more years of paralegal experience in a law firm or media entertainment company, extensive knowledge of procedures and laws governing sweepstakes, contests and promotions (and fantasy sports games a plus), and general knowledge of sports, television/entertainment business and issues pertaining to the distribution of content via Internet, mobile and other emerging technology products and services. Must be computer proficient and have a Bachelor’s degree, as well as a paralegal certificate from an accredited institution (or equivalent extent of legally-related college-level courses combined with strong legal aptitude).
