The Contracts Department of the Writers Guild of America, West, is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Contracts Counsel. The position is a full-time, exempt (salaried) position with excellent comprehensive benefits. Compensation is commensurate with experience.
Under the general supervision of the Director of Contracts, the Contracts Counsel provides analytical and other support to the department as well as to other Guild staff. The Contracts Department is responsible for enforcing, interpreting and administering the Guild's various collective bargaining agreements.
REQUIRED FUNCTIONS OR DUTIES
• Analyze, interpret, administer and enforce the provisions of the Guild's collective bargaining agreements including, but not limited to reacquisition of material and separation of rights, and nearly all other provisions of the Minimum Basic Agreement (MBA);
• Communicate with writers, attorneys, agents, and representatives from production entities to ensure compliance with Guild agreements;
• Negotiate basic cable pursuant to Appendix C and other special deals as needed;
• Analyze contractual matters from various Guild departments;
• Investigate and coordinate investigations of claims of individual writers' contracts and/or the collective bargaining agreements;
• Police, calculate, collect and distribute monies paid in accordance with MBA Articles;
• Participate in MBA training for Guild staff and, occasionally, for law firms and industry conferences;
• Work closely with enforcement departments as necessary;
• Testify in Legal arbitration hearings as necessary;
• Assist in supervising Contracts Department staff as needed;
• Help to coordinate workflow for department's administrative staff;
• Research relevant bargaining history and arbitration awards, and consult with Guild personnel, as necessary;
• Assist in generating detailed reports regarding enforcement of collective bargaining agreements and monies collected;
• Other duties deemed necessary by the Director of Contracts.
OCCUPATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
• Ability to read, understand and interpret the MBA, other Guild collective bargaining agreements, contracts and related documents.
• Must have superior analytical and organizational skills as well as superior verbal and written communication skills.
• Must be able to work well with others in a very fast-paced, multi-faceted work environment.
• J.D. required; must be a member of a state bar, preferably California.
• Entertainment industry experience preferred.
• Must be computer literate (MS Word, Excel).
