Licensing Administrator, Rhino / Catalog Group Publishing Royalties and Administration Department Recorded Music Rights Administration
Department Description:
• The U.S. Recorded Music Rights Administration Division (“RMRA”) consists of four main departments: Artist Royalties & Administration, Licensing & Rights Administration, Publishing Royalties & Administration, and Legal Affairs.
• The Publishing Royalties & Administration Department consists of three main groups: the Atlantic Group, the Warner Bros. Group, and the Rhino/Catalog Group. Collectively, these groups are responsible for the following:
• Securing from music publishers any and all rights required in order for WMG’s U.S. record labels to exploit any musical compositions embodied in the sound recordings and records that those record labels release,
• Negotiating the corresponding mechanical and other licenses covering those musical composition rights, and
• Paying those music publishers the corresponding mechanical and other license advances, fees, and/or other royalties in an accurate and timely manner.
• The Rhino/Catalog Group works specifically with the Business Affairs, Finance, Production, Operations, New Media, and Marketing Departments (among others) of Rhino Entertainment and its affiliated labels to fulfill the above-referenced responsibilities with respect to each of the recordings and records that Rhino and its affiliated labels releases, including recordings and records that feature newly –released repertoire and recordings and records that feature catalog repertoire previously-released by one of WMG’s other record labels. The Group also works with Warner Music Classics and the Parlophone Label Group to fulfill the above-referenced responsibilities with respect to the recordings and records released by those record labels.
High Level Job Description: The candidate hired to fill this position will be responsible for negotiating and securing mechanical, synchronization and other publishing licenses covering WMG’s exploitation of the musical compositions embodied in the records and recordings that WMG releases.
Detailed Job Description/ Responsibilities:
• Review, negotiate and secure mechanical and synchronization licenses and other publishing licenses covering the exploitation of musical compositions embodied on recordings and records that WMG wishes to release;
• Analyze and apply the mechanical licensing and other related royalty provisions in WMG’s agreements with its recording artists and producers and in other agreements between songwriters and their publishing companies and administrators;
• Research song titles and information about songwriters and music publishers using industry resources and websites maintained by organizations such as The Harry Fox Agency and performing rights societies like ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC;
• Confirm publishing “splits”, publisher and writer credits, and vendor/payee names, addresses and other information with various music publishing companies and other publishing rights administrators;
• Compile the necessary information regarding musical compositions embodied in the recordings and records that WMG releases and then enter that information into WMG’s internal databases, licensing systems, and royalty systems, as needed;
• Liaise with other departments within WMG’s RMRA Division and with WMG’s record labels, as needed, to perform the tasks described above (e.g., to obtain copies of artist recording agreements, album track lists, label production schedules);
• Respond to inquiries from music publishers and other music publishing rights; and
• Perform other duties and tasks related to the Department’s role and responsibilities as needed.
Required Competencies/Skills:
• Candidates for this position must be able to work well independently and as part of a team;
• Candidates must have strong computer skills, including strong data entry skills (with an emphasis on accuracy) and strong proficiency using Microsoft Office’s Excel, Word and PowerPoint applications; familiarity with Microsoft Office’s Access application is preferred, but not required.
• Candidate must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills;
• Candidate must possess excellent analytical, mathematical and organizational skills;
• Candidate must be able to meet deadlines consistently and effectively while working under pressure; candidate must be able to manage multiple assignments at any given time and prioritize them effectively and appropriately;
• Candidate must possess comprehensive working knowledge of WMG’s EROS artist royalty system; and
• Candidate must possess working knowledge of [one or more of the legacy royalty systems previously used by WMG’s major U.S. labels (e.g., Atlantic Records, Warner Bros. Records, Rhino Entertainment) / the legacy royalty system previously used by [Atlantic Records, Warner Bros. Records, Rhino Entertainment].
Special Requirements/Preferences:
• Candidate should possess 0-2 years’ experience working in a position or positions involving the negotiation of mechanical licenses, synchronization licenses and other publishing licenses.
• Working knowledge of WMG’s EROS royalty system and/or one or more of the legacy royalty systems currently used by WMG’s major U.S. labels (e.g., HP, AS400, ROYALT) is preferred, but not required, provided that if candidate does not possess knowledge of any of those WMG systems, candidate should possess a working knowledge of at least one non-WMG, music industry royalty system; and
• Candidate should be able to work overtime as needed; similarly, candidates should be prepared to schedule vacation days at times that will not conflict with any relevant internal deadlines, so that their absences will not interfere with their ability to meet such deadlines.
Education Required/Preferred:
• Bachelor’s degree required.
