About WMG:
Department Description: The Digital Legal Affairs team is a segment of the legal department of Warner Music Group (“WMG”). The team is charged with negotiating, drafting and executing WMG’s key global, multi-territory, and US digital deals. The team also coordinates digital deal implementation, and contributes to digital policy and strategy development.
Job Description/ Responsibilities: The attorney position requires 3-6 years of experience practicing corporate intellectual property law, with an emphasis on new media and copyright matters. The attorney reports to the Executive Counsel, Business Affairs, Strategic and Digital Initiatives, and works closely with the General Counsel. The attorney is responsible for negotiating and drafting complex and often first-of-kind digital deals in the new media space (e.g., download, subscription, audio and video streaming, radio, music apps and video game uses), and for briefing WMG’s executive management on new media deals and developments. The role involves working closely with the Digital Strategy and Business Development team and hosting consensus-building discussions across WMG’s labels, WMG’s music publisher Warner/Chappell, and other business units and constituencies on important topics raised by such deals and developments. The attorney will be required to function at the highest degree of precision, at a fast pace, with a highly sophisticated team of experts in their field. Previous legal work with music companies (particularly record labels) or technology companies licensing music or other content is positively viewed.
Essential Functions:
• Negotiate deals for the digital sale and licensing of music, including with telecommunication companies, online digital service providers, software companies, digital content aggregators, video game companies, etc.
• Draft and execute contracts for such deals
• Report on progress/new developments relating to specific deals and new media law and policy to WMG’s executive management, including the General Counsel, as well as to various WMG business units, including the Business Affairs departments at each of WMG’s major labels, Business Development, Royalties, and Licensing departments, as well as WMG’s music publisher, Warner/Chappell
• Lead internal discussions on new digital strategy and policy relating to developments in business and the law; author and enforce resulting policies
• Manage and respond to inquiries from WMG business units and international affiliates on matters related to WMG digital deals, digital policies, and a host of related issues/matters
Required Competencies/Skills:
• Superb knowledge of copyright law
• Strong negotiation skills and experience (in particular, the ability to lead and manage negotiations with a multiplicity of component parts)
• Refined and well-practiced drafting skills (in particular, the ability to develop creative solutions in areas with evolving legal guidance)
• Excellent communication skills
• Motivated self-starter, team player, dedicated professional
• Strong familiarity with the recorded music and music publishing industries, as well as related legal issues and recent developments
• Strong familiarity with new technology developments, and related legal issues
Required Professional Experience:
• J.D. and active license to practice law in New York State
