VP/Senior Director, Business & Legal Affairs
Rhino Entertainment Company
Unique opportunity for an experienced Music Business Attorney to be work with a solid team of professionals in a dynamic company. Rhino Entertainment is the catalog division of Warner Music Group responsible for U.S. catalog repertoire on a global basis, and also a full service record label engaged in new releases and exciting new initiatives.
This position reports to the SVP, Business & Legal Affairs and offers the opportunity to work in a music-loving environment on a wide variety of matters including new artist signings, 360 deals, revitalization of existing catalog through deals with WMG's legacy artists, new soundtrack and cast albums, and live theatrical partnerships. In addition, the VP/Sr. Director will delve into sophisticated copyright issues, plus work with rights of publicity and trademark in the context of merchandising, endorsements and theatrical productions.
VP/Sr. Director will have the opportunity to interface directly with Rhino senior management and will assist in the supervision and training of junior members of the Business Affairs department.
Detailed Job Description/ Responsibilities:
Evaluating potential deals, negotiating and drafting agreements with artists, producers and licensees, including recording agreements, producer agreements, distribution agreements, merchandising agreements, joint ventures, soundtracks and cast album agreements, audio/video master use licenses, finished goods agreements and video production agreements
Managing ongoing contractual relationships and handling business affairs matters for catalogue artists plus new signings and projects
Monitoring compliance with contractual obligations
Rendering general business and legal advice to departments within the company, including identifying and addressing legal and business issues that arise from product development plans
Reviewing and clearing creative material, including program content for video exploitation, audio releases and related marketing materials
Researching and interpreting existing contracts
Reviewing royalty statements, and working with audit team on claims.
Other general legal research, particularly related to intellectual property rights
Such other duties as reasonably may be required
Required Competencies/Skills:
J.D. or equivalent, plus admission to the California and/or New York state bars
6-10+ years of focused transactional experience in the Recorded Music Industry (law firm and/or in-house experience)
Prior experience working for a record label strongly preferred
Strong working knowledge of copyright and contract law
Strong drafting/writing skills
Manage high volume of projects while maintaining precision and attention to detail
Demonstrated ability to work independently within a team-oriented environment
Deep knowledge and appreciation of catalog music and legacy artists is helpful
