Reporting to SVP Data Platform with dotted line into Engineering, the Senior Director, Technology - Data Platform will partner with the SVP Data Platform to create a system that exponentially increases Viacom’s ability to analyze data, model insights, and ideate new opportunities that drive tremendous value for the Company. He/She will have a deep subject matter expertise in big data, and a working knowledge of how graph technologies and machine learning can be applied to entertainment media. The successful candidate will help to evolve Viacom’s data ecosystem from the tactical to the strategic, knowing how to push boundaries while delivering continuous results. The Senior Director will also collaborate with other Data Platform leaders to distill technological concepts into actionable and explainable plans, and evangelize those plans across the Company.
Principal Responsibilities
• Drive technology strategy for the Data Platform, collaborating with subject matter experts and ensuring that the Platform meets business needs.
• Serve as a leader, mentor, and sounding board for engineers working on Data Platform crews.
• Ensure that architecture and execution contains the right balance of scalability and pragmatism, minimizing tech debt while maintaining an agile/nimble culture.
• Grow/deepen a culture of quality, creativity, and accountability
• Work with SVP Data Platform and other business executives to identify opportunities, evangelize directions, and celebrate successes.
Basic Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree preferred
• Hands-on experience working with big data - Data Lakes, Data catalogs, self-service BI, and real-time data - with feed structures and APIs to govern access
• Familiarity with Spark, AWS (and competitive) offerings, and graph databases (semantic, property, etc.)
• Familiarity with machine learning algorithms, particularly commercial and open source options for image recognition, natural language processing, and emotion detection.
• Familiarity with semantic web technologies (RDF, SKOS, SPARQL and OWL)
• 5 years of hands on software engineering with a desire and ability to stay current while solving business problems practically and efficiently
• 2 years of managing engineers
• Expert knowledge in any or all of the following: MySQL, MongoDB, PostGreSQL, Unity, JavaScript, Swift, Objective-C, PHP/HipHop, Java, Scala, Node.js, Object Oriented Programming, Design Patterns, and Functional Programming techniques
• Practical knowledge of development tools including Git, JIRA, Xcode, Eclipse, Sublime, Jenkins, Stash, Bamboo, Crucible, Rigor, HipChat, and New Relic
• Solid knowledge and dedication to Agile/Scrum development principles
• Ability to travel to visit engineers and customers outside the US
Additional Qualifications

• Experience with both build and buy/integrate scenarios
• Well-read, up to date on latest tools/technologies
