Nickelodeon and Viacom Consumer Products (NVCP) license and develop product across our successful portfolio of Viacom brands including PAW Patrol, Shimmer and Shine, Blaze and the Monster Machines, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and SpongeBob SquarePants.
The Product Development Designer position will join the growing publishing arm of NVCP. We work with major publishers across EMEA, developing books, magazines, collectibles and partworks. This role will provide a key design function within the team, setting creative direction on new brands, overseeing product approvals for a variety of licensees, managing in-house book development, providing creative support to partners, mentoring the junior designer role, and ensuring we develop best-in-class, innovative publishing across our well-loved children’s brands.
We’re looking for someone with excellent design skills and a solid background in children’s publishing – including novelty titles. You’ll have experience briefing freelance designers and illustrators, and setting and managing multiple deadlines at once. You’ll enjoy working with more junior members in a team, helping them to develop their design skills. Ideally, you’ll also have some knowledge of the licensing industry. You’ll be at your best working in a fast-paced environment, managing varying projects at different stages of development, with creative flair, commercial acumen and core organisational and communication skills.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Product Development:
• Responsible for the day-to-day management of product design approvals from concept to production across EMEA using our PD system – including books, magazines, partworks, covermounts and, when required, digital and interactive products.
• Work closely with the Editors to ensure product is on-brand and high quality.
• Provide design direction, creative support and feedback to licensees to ensure brand values and product quality are maintained.
• Work with our style guides to set design direction for publishing across our new brands; deliver design direction to key creative partners; ensure its application across product.
• Create or amend book covers and layouts for partners when required.
• Work with the PD Manager to initiate creative development meetings with key partners to discuss brands, asset availability and submissions processes.
• Develop and maintain successful working relationships with both internal and external partners and attend key licensee meetings and trade shows when relevant. This will involve some travel across EMEA throughout the year.
• Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of creative trends and publishing product, including identifying potential new business opportunities.
• Commit to consistently improve creative development – push the creative boundaries of traditional approaches to develop innovative, business-relevant and original creative solutions for our brands.
• Alongside the PD Manager, build relationships with the NY-based publishing team, media production team, regional creative and CP teams to ensure a smooth development process.
Creative:
• Work with the PD Manager to create launch book ranges using style guide art across a variety of formats, including storybooks and colour/activity books.
• Brief and manage external freelance designers, project managing multiple deadlines at once.
• Commission and deliver original illustrations using external agencies/freelancers, and manage internal artwork approval process with NYC team.
• Create and manage the development of publishing style guides.
• Provide research, development and execution of original creative projects as appropriate (potential product and retail pitch opportunities)
• Develop training tools for internal staff and agents working across the publishing category.
• Initiate creative brainstorms to help inspire product development.
• Work with the PD Manager to oversee the day-to-day work and development of the Junior Designer.
ROLE-SPECIFIC SKILLS/ATTRIBUTES
Skills
and Experience
• BA or Technical College qualification in a related graphic design or product field.
• Proven commercial design experience within children’s book publishing.
• Understanding of the licensing industry, and the use of licensed characters in publishing.
• Experience of managing multiple creative projects to tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Excellent working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, especially InDesign
• Good knowledge of Microsoft Office– Excel, Word, PPT
