As the head of the Viacom Advanced Media Frontend Engineering team, you have a passion for driving a great engineering culture for frontend engineers. You have a knack for recognizing top-notch engineering talent and you know how to get the best out of them. You also work well with product managers and business users to ensure they are getting what they need from your team. You believe that specialization is necessary in a large organization, but the most important thing is getting the job done even if it means leaving your comfort zone. This position reports to the VP, Engineering – VAMP.
Responsibilities
• Manage a team of talented engineers building highly performant, frontend code and components for integration into sites and apps
• Collaborate with technical leads, architects, product management, and other managers to ensure the right engineers are in place to craft best-of-breed applications for Advanced Media
• Mentor and grow the team according to their strengths, setting goals, and helping them set their career paths
• Recruit top-notch engineers as a part of your day-to-day activities
• Evangelize and guide the team on modern, agile engineering practices such as Test Driven Development and Continuous Delivery
• Handle escalation of issues and remove blockers to ensure engineers have the opportunity to be successful
• Anticipate changing directions, both in product development internally and in the software engineering space. Be prepared to act fast in providing solutions.
• Identify and implement a metrics driven process, but ensure that working software is the key indicator of success
• Partner with infrastructure and operations teams to ensure correct monitoring, build, and deployment processes are in place
• Participate as a leader and mentor in our entry level engineer program
Basic Qualifications
• 4-6 years experience managing and inspiring medium to large sized teams of software engineers
• 5 years in hands on software engineering with a desire and ability to stay current while solving business problems practically and efficiently
Additional Qualifications
• Expert knowledge of native JavaScript and at least one framework like Angular, React, or Ember.js
• Practical knowledge of other programming languages and platforms such as Node.js or Python
• Good working knowledge of UNIX based operating systems
• Excellent communication skills
• Solid knowledge and dedication to agile development principles
• Proven ability to inspire and mentor engineers and leads to reach their potential
• Experience with web based video, advertising, and reporting is desired
• Experience deploying and running systems in public and private clouds
• Expertise in system architecture, object oriented design, and knowledge of functional programming
• Willingness to travel a few times per year to visit offshore engineers and customers outside the US
• Bachelor degree in computer science or equivalent experience
