The Role
The role is located in the Analytics branch of Viacom’s Business Intelligence department, which brings together specialized Analytics teams from across the business with general, dedicated BI operations expertise and support. Influencing all levels of the data flow from source through to report production, the group ensure business reporting is reliable, impartial, consistent and timely.
The role of the Analytics teams is to provide stakeholders including brand groups, regional clusters, business lines and HQ with regular analytics, data-led insights and business expertise across Viacom International’s TV channels, website/apps and off-screen activities.
Key Responsibilities
The Research Analytics team is responsible for all BI research reporting outputs across linear and non-linear platforms. Using reporting tools (primarily SAP Business Objects) we manage and publish numerous weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reports on performance and forecasting across all major metrics that inform and guide the business. The team is also involved in projects to build bespoke tools and dashboards to make research data available across the business for self-service.
Additionally, stakeholders across the business look to the team for analytical insights and expertise relating to performance and trends across VIMN’s properties and the markets in which we operate.
Research Analytics Team Responsibilities
Report Publishing / Amendments
The Research Analytics team provide ownership for BI reporting outputs, across all VIMN platforms, to stakeholders across the business:
This involves:
• Defining workflow in internal and external systems to ensure correct data is captured and reported.
• Reconciliation of reported data back to source systems in other areas
• Management of reporting timelines
• Simple BI tool reporting amendments and ownership of any offline reporting requirements
In addition, the Analytic team must work with Reporting Operations group to:
• Script and, where possible, automate standard processes
• Develop, enhance and automate reporting solutions
Business Analysis
Business Performance
• Work with business stakeholders to identify key performance metrics that should be regularly tracked by BI.
• Understand performance trends, which business areas are driving them and the internal/external context in which they have occurred.
• Awareness of expected performance vs targets in current quarter and financial year, in the form of communicated variance to target and significant risks/opportunities.
Business Insights
• Provide ad-hoc analytical insights and coordinate best-practise share for key business stakeholders
Business Communication and Subject Matter Expertise
• Represent Business Intelligence outputs across the business and are acknowledged subject matter experts regarding research.
• Manage and understand HQ requirements across stakeholder groups (e.g. – brands, clusters) and be able to support business objectives for all LOBs in these groups.
• Communicate with business stakeholders regarding regular publications, including summarising headlines for senior audiences where necessary
• Own communication with local teams regarding BI analytics or report development projects
• Point of contact for local and HQ teams across the business regarding specialist data questions
• Understanding of research area of VIMN business, our position within local and int’l markets and the wider trends, challenges and opportunities present in those markets
Role Specific Skills/Attributes
The Analyst will primarily be responsible for publishing numerous regular research reports that are used across the business, handling ad hoc requests and overseeing the BI research reporting system. The person will be expected to become an expert in our Business Object reporting software and manage any issues in this area. The role will be involved in projects to further improve our research reporting capabilities and build self-service tools. In addition, the person will be expected to provide analysis and insight in order to explain the story behind the numbers.
Analyst Role requirements:
• Thoroughly understand concepts behind Business Intelligence (e.g. – data warehouses) and how information can be used to drive competitive advantage
• Have technical BI skills, ideally including experience using BI reporting tools (e.g. – SAP Business Objects) and also industry specific tools (e.g. TechEdge AdvantEdge)
• Advanced knowledge of MS Excel a must.
• Knowledge and understanding of TV metrics and wider industry
• Have excellent attention to detail and an ability to understand and implement complex formula
• Ability to understand, qualify and summarise information requests from varied business stakeholders
• Work with Technical departments to further improve processes and solve any BI system issues
• Effectively escalate roadblocks to management or senior colleagues in a way that facilitates their resolution
• Ensure that regular work is documented in a consistent, simple to follow manner
• Is able to question and/or challenge current work processes in a constructive manner
• Be able to demonstrate Viacom Core Competencies and share VIMN values (see below)
