Description
Capitol Music Group (CMG) is comprised of Capitol Records, Virgin Records, Motown, Blue Note Records, Astralwerks, Harvest Records, Capitol Christian Music Group, Priority Records and Deep Well Records, as well as Capitol Studios and CMG’s independent label services and distribution division, Caroline. Capitol Music Group is based in Hollywood, California in the iconic Capitol Records Tower.
We are currently seeking a breakout star employee to bring their wealth of expertise into our highly motivated team to help drive the future of the music industry at a major label level. The Senior Director, Research will be responsible for owning all levels of reporting produced within the Capitol Music Group. The position requires both a wide-ranging skill set for working across every department at a modern label group and a unique perspective to think ahead and anticipate the needs of tomorrow today. Additionally, this position will be tasked with being a major linchpin for strategy and change management across all CMG.
Job Functions:
• Own the production of all existing reports on a daily, weekly and monthly basis for a variety of key artists and labels within CMG with support from a Coordinator and other members of Research as needed.
• Develop and produce ad-hoc reports within our small team of like-minded individuals for a wide range of needs across CMG on a timely, as-needed basis.
• Participate as a key stakeholder in all department discussions around best practices and next steps to help provide the most robust and forward-thinking analysis possible within our industry.
• Liaison directly with CMG Senior Management to drive and define our overall strategy and focus as a label on a daily basis.
• Collaborate as a leader of & advocate for the Research department across multiple departments, including but not limited to A&R, Digital, Finance, International, Legal, Marketing, Promotion, and Sales, on a daily basis.
• Own direct responsibility for the continued development and emphasis on Streaming growth within our business.
Job Requirements:
Skills/Abilities:
• A direct background and current position with a heavy use of data analytics.
• An obsessive, life-long passion for music and the music business required.
• Extensive knowledge of the current music industry as a whole including market trends, international territories, major accounts, artists, genres etc. A healthy emphasis in the streaming world is preferred.
• Advanced user of Microsoft Office Suite with heavy Excel work required. Intermediate user of Apple products with an emphasis in Keynote preferred. Photoshop and/or design experience a plus.
• Coding experience with SQL or a similar product suite preferred.
• A passion for the art of analytics along with a need to constantly question how and why we operate the way we do.
• A desire to heavily participate in all high-level strategic discussions within CMG along with the conviction to stand behind your recommendations from our team up to C-level executives.
• A keen interest in data visualization, high-level presentations and long-range planning/thinking.
• A rabid desire to acquire knowledge from anywhere, whether related parallel industries to highly unlikely sources, and apply it to our situation with constant trial and error.
• A relaxed and confident approach to all business relationships internally and externally. The ability to put oneself in the position of an artist, manager, or partner at any given time to see their side as needed.
• Experience directly managing employees on a daily basis and providing an open, challenging work environment for those same employees to grow and advance quickly.
• Ability to attend off-site meetings and concerts as required.
• Prepared to travel domestically and internationally as required.
Experience:
• 7 years working within the music industry with a clear, demonstrated success rate required. Major label or distribution experience preferred.
Education:
• Undergraduate degree with highly relevant background required. Music Industry or Music Business majors preferred. Graduate degree or currently working towards an MBA is a plus.
