Full Time Job
The Licensing Manager for USM will work closely with all OpCos and repertoire owners to manage Universal’s licensing globally. The role aims to maximise global licensing in and licensing out and works closely with Eagle Rock to achieve maximum broadcast income.
A key point of contact between marketing, legal and OpCos, the role requires a high attention to detail and strong negotiation skills. The Licensing Manager will proactively seek new licensing revenue streams to grow the ever expanding licensing business through close working relationships with all sectors of Universal. The role involves the management of the Licensing Co-ordinator.
General Licensing
o General licensing for USM areas including TV Marketing, Catalogue, DVD, Special Projects & Digital
o Licensing for ad hoc compilations and boxsets for other areas of the business
o Key point person for all Licensing Departments globally to help secure clearances
o Improving the clearance flow both internally and via the Universal Music clearance system (GCS)
o Managing the licensing budget
o Accurate and regular communication flow to marketing teams on all projects
o GCS input for new products, changes of configuration for internal releases
o GCS input for internal and third party compilations
o Establishing and maintaining relationships with repertoire owners, international licensing and Strategic Marketing departments
o Updating and supplying monthly usage report for various label groups and supplying label copy where relevant
o Maintain accurate records of clearance status on all projects, ranges etc.
o Set licensing deadlines with Marketing for product releases
o Update the Licensing & Synchronisation, TV and Catalogue areas of The Globe (Universal’s Intranet)
o Monitoring clearances with both marketing and legal departments (local and international)
o Keep track of singles release dates to maintain the significant ‘current hits list’
o Negotiating terms and royalty rates with third parties
o Issuing schedules, deal memos, Longform Agreements and ensuring execution prior to the release of albums
o Review of third party Longform Agreements and recommend changes to Legal
o Working closely with Product Managers to recommend additional tracks for licensing
o Supplying final approval document with label copy and sourcing and sending masters for all third party clearances
o Ensuring all markets are aware of the intercompany licensing agreement (ICLA)
o Negotiating to have additional elements included for the benefit of USM
o Overseeing all projects being looked after by the Licensing Co-ordinator
Label Licensing Function
o Oversee all compilation and synchronisation requests for UMGI centrally signed artists
Central Licensing Function
o Liaising with international territories, including dealing with their queries and chasing on key clearances on their behalf
o Driving system improvements for GCS and GRS and test as required
o Train new staff within UMGI on the capabilities of GCS
o GCS Super user – granting and removing access to GCS as relevant
o Review all sensitive projects submitted in GCS
o Mediate any licensing issues between OpCos or between an OpCo and Repertoire Owner
Pre-Cleared Tracks & Compilations
o Oversee the development of the pre-cleared database, improving functionality and adding content
Broadcast
o Liaising with Eagle Rock, rep owners and other content owners to maximise broadcast exploitation of existing audio visual programmes
o Help Eagle Rock ascertain broadcast rights for all Universal audio-visual titles
o Work closely with rep owners and production to source masters, cue sheets and images for Eagle Rock
o Reporting and analysis of deals secured
o Work closely with agencies who represent Universal titles to ensure maximum revenue is achieved
Synchronisation
o Ensuring all synchronisation teams globally are aware of forthcoming releases
o Overseeing the creation of synchronisation samplers
o Providing best practice to all OpCos for synchronisation deals
o Advising OpCos of synchronisation deals that include their territory, and pitching campaign ideas around big track usages accordingly
o Liaising with publishers to ensure they are aware of our global pitching strategies
o Ensuring the global list of Universal synchronisation contacts is kept up to date and shared globally

o Solid Licensing background with an understanding of music / content licensing & experienced with contracts
o Good communicator, proven negotiator and presenter
o Proven development of key relationships
o Well organised with ability to plan and deliver; high attention to detail
o Exceptional time management skills, with ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
o Proven interpersonal relationship skills
o Must have worked in a results driven and fast moving environment; hard working and diligent
o Good IT skills
o Passion for music
