Overall Description
Reporting to the VP, Business and Legal Affairs, the Director will be responsible for negotiating and drafting all media-related agreements for, and serving as lead counsel for the TV Division. The Director also supports the Marketing organization.
Job Responsibilities
• Provide real-time legal support to a 24/7 news organization that is covering stories around the world
• Rapidly analyze and advise on legal issues related to live news coverage, including copyright and fair use, defamation, publicity rights, invasion of privacy, trespass, etc.
• Provide legal support to the long-form video and digital video production teams
• Draft, review, analyze and interpret contracts in an accurate and timely manner and provide timely and thoughtful legal advice on potential risks and issues.
• Negotiate content rights for TV and Digital platforms for domestic and international.
• Draft television and online production agreements.
• Draft all agreements necessary to support television news reporting, including stringer agreements, publicity releases, footage licenses, and assignments.
• Provide legal support for international syndication.
• Counsel digital and television producers on rights matters relating to the use of third party content, including videos, photos and music.
• Manage rights information for long form network and VOD content.
• File quarterly music usage reports with performing rights societies.
• Manage annual filings for US and international retransmission royalty claims.
• Review digital and television advertisements for compliance with company standards.
• Provide legal support to the digital team for the acquisition and use of user generated content, including photos and videos.
• Draft contest and sweepstakes rules. Advise on legal issues related to contests and sweepstakes.
• Manage claims and litigation related to television and digital content.
• Manage the Licensing and Copyright Administrator.
Professional Qualifications
• 7 - 10 years business and legal affairs experience at a network, studio, or television production company and/or a major law firm.
• Extensive knowledge of copyright laws, both US and international.
• Experience with music and video licensing.
• Experience drafting and negotiating television production agreements.
• Litigation management experience is preferred.
• Experience managing and coaching other employees preferred.
• Admitted to GA Bar or eligible to obtain admission as In-House Counsel.
Qualitative Skills and Attributes
• Demonstrates strong verbal and written skills, including excellent contract drafting skills.
• Strong leadership skills - confident in leading others and making difficult decisions.
• Demonstrates critical thinking skills for problem solving and comfortable working with multiple priorities in a deadline driven industry. Proven ability to incisively and pragmatically evaluate cases for settlement and trial, and independently make decisions regarding complex legal and corporate issues.
• Excellent negotiation skills.
• Excellent inter-personal skills with ability to inspire trust and confidence with key stakeholders at all levels.
• Strong individual confidence
