We are looking to hire an instructor to teach a semester course on the Music Industry and Sound Engineering/Recording for Film, TV, New Media and Music. The course should be split into two sections: an overview of the music industry, and a familiarization for each student with recording studio production, studio environments, equipment and use.
Course emphasis should be given to career possibilities and the gifts and skills required to succeed in each of the major areas, including work as a performer, songwriter, record producer and engineer, artist manager, booking agent, concert promoter, record retailer, entertainment attorney, A&R executive, marketing executive, sales executive and music journalist. The course should provide a broad overview of the music industry, and explain how its various segments operate on a day-to-day basis: where monies are generated, who the key players are, how deals are made and broken, how to protect your interests, and new developments in digital technology that are changing the way that music is marketed, promoted, distributed, and heard.
Students enrolled in the course should:
• gain an understanding of the structure and methodologies of a typical U.S. record company, including A&R, marketing, radio promotion,
public relations, sales & distribution, product development, art, manufacturing and business affairs.
• recognize the structure of, and relationship between, the recording, music publishing, marketing and live performance industries.?
• learn about different career and income opportunities, and develop a strategy to break in and succeed in the music industry.?
• understand the business aspects involved in the producing, manufacturing, marketing, distributing and other use of recordings and the
live performance trade.
• have a competent understanding of:
o The legal fundamentals of song writing and publishing, including copyright law and payment mechanisms
o The world of the artist and supporting crew
o The flow process and personnel in music production
o The flow process and personnel in music distribution
o The major music consumers and venues
o The basic business principles as they apply to the music business
o The basic principles of personal finance
o The basic principles of record deals
With respect to music recording, the course should provide students with the opportunity to navigate various audio consoles, controls, and digital recording methods and tools.
Applicants should have at least 10 years working experience in the music industry as either a record producer and/or music recording engineer, and should continue to be employed int he music industry. The ideal instructor would be a working music industry professional who has maintained relationships with music company executives, publishing company executives, recording artists, record producers, and has a passionate desire to teach and ''give back'' to the next generation of music industry professionals.
