Job Description for Executive Director, Programming
Summary Description: The Executive Director of Programming provides right hand level support to the Vice President of Programming. This position is responsible for executing the long term programming strategies for the linear Tennis Channel and digital Tennis Channel Plus programming services as well as shaping the day-to-day programming activity such as scheduling, acquisition, and operations. He/she will exhibit strategic analytical support and direction for on-air placement of current and future programming content and provides management and leadership of Programming staff. The ideal candidate will be a highly self-motivated visionary who has a passion for sports, and tennis specifically, with a robust work history in Sports and Network television.
Daily Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:
• Strong Leadership skills
• Plan short and long-term strategic program scheduling and maintain program schedules throughout the year, including stunt programming, live event planning, live pre-and postgame and ancillary programming
• Share responsibility of negotiating program agreements various third party event and program suppliers
• Work side by side with Head of Programming on major Rights Acquisitions and contract management with partners such as French Open, Wimbledon, US Open, Indian Wells, and Citi Open, among others.
• Leads and facilitates Programming department's collaboration with Finance to coordinate, submit and analyze annual budget, as well as Profit & Loss requests for potential program acquisitions and/or renewals
• Loads upfront program schedule for the purpose of building the Annual financial plan and for the Ad Sales Upfront selling period
• Communicates Programming department's contract obligations to internal departments and other industry professionals in a timely manner
• Regularly interacts with key departments including Production, Marketing, Affiliate Sales, Ad Sales, Finance, Commercial Operations and tennischannel.com
• Develops strong relationships with Tennis industry governing bodies, third-party event rights holders and program packagers
• Regularly researches, identifies and recommends programming initiatives across all platforms to maximize the value of all content
• Evaluates alternative programming opportunities and develops new, strategic opportunities to help execute the company's creative vision and maintain the integrity of the brand
• Prepares specific reports and presentations for Senior management and creates reports for distribution to external departments
Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in Communications, Business, Sports Management or related field is required
• 10+ years' experience in Program Planning, Scheduling and Acquisitions is required
• Solid experience in managing a team of 5 or more employees is required
• Strong knowledge of sports and sports media including television and digital media is required
• Proficient in MS Office
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Highly driven and motivated to shape strategy and lead
• Knowledge of Paradigm, Broadway or SIMS program scheduling system and a strong understanding of Nielsen and/or Rentrak ratings preferred
