ABOUT SMITHSONIAN FOLKWAYS RECORDINGS: Smithsonian Folkways, part of the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, is the nonprofit record label of the national museum of the United States. We are dedicated to supporting cultural diversity and increased understanding among peoples through the documentation, preservation, and dissemination of sound. The label operates very much as any other independent label but with an educational mission centered on a large collection of recordings, which has expanded considerably since the original acquisition of Folkways Records in 1988. The Marketing and Sales department uses state-of-the-art techniques and technologies to disseminate recordings as widely as possible.
JOB DESCRIPTION: Smithsonian Folkways Recordings is looking for a highly motivated, professional, flexible, hardworking, and disciplined individual for the full-time, temporary position of Marketing Assistant in our Washington, D.C., location. This is a fun, challenging position in a fast-paced environment.
THE CHALLENGE: Find potential fans, intrigue them, and build a lasting relationship with them. Marketing at Smithsonian Folkways begins with music in its context, seeks curious listeners, then aims to create a long-term interaction with them. We love to acquaint interested listeners with musics that rarely find their way into the charts; then reveal the stories behind those musics and the musicians who created them, connecting people with their own cultural traditions and those of others. We use all (legal and ethical) modern means to achieve this end.
THE ROLE: Smithsonian Folkways Recordings is largely funded by revenues from sales. Our artists benefit from sales via royalties. The role of the Marketing and Sales team is to elevate awareness and the positive perception of Smithsonian Folkways Recordings' collections using all physical and digital means resulting in increased sales. In this role, you will be expected to proactively seek cost-effective ways to improve Smithsonian Folkways' presence in the global market, to service our media and distribution partners promptly and efficiently with the goal of increasing sales. A significant part of the job is in assisting the Marketing and Sales staff in setting and meeting scheduled milestones, executing day-to-day tasks, and delegating to interns and volunteers in order to meet deadlines. Each member of the team is vital to the success of the label and is actively encouraged to contribute new ideas and methodologies to achieve mission objectives.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Be an active and collegial member of the team that drives and executes our marketing sales strategy.
• Support the Marketing and Sales department priorities in meeting deadlines and goals.
• Define and develop innovative strategies and detailed plans to increase awareness and sales.
• Drive positioning and key messages for product launches and promotions.
• Become a music, systems, and industry expert (with respect to mission) for the Marketing and Sales team. Smithsonian Institution
• Assisting Director of Marketing and Sales in daily activities to achieve Marketing and Sales department objectives.
• Delegating tasks to and supervising interns and volunteers.
• Recruiting interns and volunteers.
• Responding to general inquiries to the marketing department and the Director of Marketing and Sales and
independently resolving them where possible.
• Handling administrative activities for the Director of Marketing and Sales and the department.
• Researching and evaluating contractors to extend the capabilities of the marketing and sales department.
• Analyzing systems and processes and recommending improvements to the Director of Marketing and Sales.
• Creating marketing and sales materials as needed either internally or via outside contracts. These can include
flyers, one sheets, posters, T-shirts, radio and TV ads, website banner ads, and mobile apps.
• Ensuring that marketing materials are sent to media within the needed timeframe.
• Occasional travel to conferences and trade shows for purposes of sales and marketing.
• Serving as day-to-day point of contact with publicity contractors.
• Assisting in marketing to radio stations.
• Assisting with direct marketing activities (email newsletter, social media campaigns, surveys).
• Coordinating delivery of new album assets to distributors and media.
• Assisting with artist relations.
• Maintaining marketing release and milestone calendar.
• Assisting with cross-Smithsonian marketing to other units of the Institution.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills with copywriting, editing, and report-writing experience.
• Good administrative skills and ability to manage upwardly.
• Good organizational abilities including prioritizing multiple tasks (some urgent), setting and meeting milestones and deadlines.
• Experience with project management.
• Team player with collegial attitude.
• Attention to detail and meticulous skills for design especially related to brand identity.
• Self-motivated and takes responsibility/ownership of tasks.
• Personable and engaging personality.
• Computer skills including MS Office, Internet, social networks, graphic design software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign (video editing would be an asset also).
• Creative ideas for problem solving, improving processes, and marketing programs.
• High level of phone etiquette and people skills.
• Good research and analytical skills.
• Knowledge of music industry, marketing, and sales practices.
• Knowledge of general business practices.
• Anticipates needs, takes initiative, and creates efficient and effective processes.
• Thinks creatively, proactively, strategically, and analytically.
• Flexible and adaptable, comfortable in changing situations.
• Willing to travel (rarely exceeds 5% of time).
DESIRED (NOT REQUIRED) SKILL:
• Fluency in Spanish and/or other languages.
REQUIREMENTS:
• At least 3 years job, educational, or volunteer experience related to music marketing/sales/customer service preferably with an e-commerce component.
• Must be knowledgeable about the Internet, online shopping, e-commerce systems, online selling, and marketing technologies and strategies and customer service.
• Good organizational and analytical skills as well as outstanding written and oral communication skills.
