JOB SUMMARY
This position reports to the Associate Director of Public Relations, and manages publicity campaigns for and provides support to the Communications Division of the San Francisco Symphony.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Plans, manages, and executes publicity campaigns for the San Francisco Symphony, with a focus on the SF Symphony's subscription series, educational activities, community and audience-building initiatives, and special events.
• Emphasis will be on soliciting stories that position SFS as a dynamic and innovative leader.
• Creates PR plans/calendars, prepares spokespeople, schedules interviews, writes press releases/materials, fact sheets/FAQs, backgrounders, Q&A's and other materials in support of ongoing PR programs.
• Initiates, develops, and maintains local, national and international media and public contacts.
• Works closely with external consultants and other SFS departments to manage publicity efforts and maximize efficacy.
• Evaluates and ensures that all promotional materials and web copy are up to date and accurate.
• Coordinates occasional press conferences and other special media events or special projects.
• Plans and implements photography and video coverage.
• Assists with Press Room website content and photo management.
• Attends concerts and special events; occasionally hosts press receptions before and during performances Escorts photographers and TV crews, acting as a representative of the organization.
• Responds to or delegates all general PR telephone and e-mail inquiries from the general public and the press, including daily unsolicited media calls.
• Oversees press coverage management with PR Assistant.
• Miscellaneous duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Four-year college degree or equivalent experience required.
• Minimum of three to five years public relations experience, preferably in an arts organization, preferably in the Bay Area.
• Proven media results, contacts, and relationships.
• Knowledge and appreciation of classical music required.
• Well-developed communication, writing and organizational skills, to include the highest levels of tact, diplomacy, and discretion.
• Solid understanding of what makes a story, from the point of view of the writer/editor.
• Ability to manage multiple PR campaigns simultaneously and prioritize the institution's public relations needs.
• Creativity and familiarity with storytelling tools, including photography and video, strongly preferred.
• Creativity and familiarity with social media best practices, and experience developing content for blogs, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social tools, to tell stories and promote events.
• Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to interact with all levels of staff, media, and the public.
• Strong service orientation and professional and positive approach are essential.
• Computer skills needed: MS Word, Excel, and Imaging/Photoshop experience helpful.
• Ability to work well with a variety of people, calmly and efficiently in a fast-paced, dynamic environment while managing multiple projects and deadlines.
• Sense of humor and grace under pressure.
