JOB SUMMARY
A natural storyteller with a passion for music, the Content Manager oversees the creation, curation, production, and aggregation of content to drive awareness and engagement across all brand touchpoints. The Content Manager works on long-lead-time content generation, focusing on programs that are months away to create thoughtful strategies to market, promote, and underwrite these programs well in advance of their fruition. Reporting to the Director of Public Relations and the Director of Creative Services, the Content Manager plays a key role in the organization, working cross-departmentally to provide strategic direction and oversight in promoting a wide assortment of programming and activities for the San Francisco Symphony.
Duties and Responsibilities
Curation/Creation of Content (70%)
• In conjunction with Content Strategy Team, develops content to reinforce identified strategies: narratives & themes relating to artists, conductors and repertoire, institutional development and education impact statements, reputation management, and brand awareness.
• Works closely with Marketing, Social Media, and Creative teams in planning, developing content across print and digital communications, driving engagement and building brand awareness.
• Develops and maintains relationships with Artistic staff, Music Director, and Orchestra musicians to plan and develop relevant content throughout the season.
• Works with staff and artist agents to schedule interviews for print/video.
• Identifies and engages third party content creators, freelance writers and editors and video teams, working with Project Managers to route all materials through the organization's proofing process to ensure accuracy and on-time delivery.
• Aggregates existing and planned internal and third party content into Digital Asset Management System (DAMS).
Project Management (30%)
• Serves as lead on the Content Strategy Team, assessing long term content needs for Marketing, Audience Development, Fundraising, Public Relations, Publications, Education, and other internal stakeholders; identifies and recommends ways to utilize content across multiple departments.
• Develops and manages budgets, calendars and schedules for content creation.
• Utilizes SFS Digital Asset Management and Project Management software to ensure content is shared and utilized across the organization
• Works closely with Creative Services, Marketing and Public Relations teams to ensure content reflects SFS branding guidelines and meets SFS institutional messaging guidelines
• Works across departments to measure content performance/effectiveness through metrics and provides strategic recommendations on adjusting tone/style/length/subject matter to drive engagement.
• Works to ensure all are aware of content in a timely fashion and content is utilized
QUALIFICATIONS
• Four-year college degree or equivalent experience required.
• Well-developed writing, editing, and communications skills; Understanding of what makes a compelling story
• Solid knowledge of classical music repertoire, industry, and artists
• Topical expertise and writing ability to conduct artist interviews and craft Q&A and editorial content
• Ability to manage freelance writers and to edit written content for accuracy, tone, and style
• Creative expertise to oversee the development of materials consistent with the look and feel of the SFS brand across multiple platforms.
• Ability to communicate strategic direction to outside vendors/agencies/freelancers.
• Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to interact with all levels of staff, media, musicians, and guest artists with the highest levels of tact, diplomacy, and discretion.
• Ability to work well with a variety of people, calmly and efficiently in a fast-paced, dynamic environment while managing multiple projects and deadlines.
• Excellent organizational and long term planning skills
• Familiarity with Digital Asset Management Systems, Content Management Systems, and Project Management/Collaboration software
• Creativity and familiarity with social media best practices, and experience managing the development of content for blogs, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social tools to tell stories and promote events.

The San Francisco Symphony, under Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas, is one of the country's leading orchestras. Some 220 concerts each year reach an audience of more than 600,000, while national and international broadcasts, heard on more than 215 radio stations, reach millions more. The Symphony has its own recording label, SFS Media, and its recordings have won some of the world's highest honors. Its multimedia initiative, Keeping Score, has reached over six million people with television and radio broadcasts, DVDs, and an interactive website.
