POSITION PURPOSE:
Under the direction of the National Director, News & Broadcast, the Broadcast Manager & Labor Counsel, News & Broadcast will represent the interests of SAG-AFTRA and its members by the enforcement of the News and Broadcast collective bargaining agreements and shall be responsible for all matters related to SAG-AFTRA's broadcast jurisdiction including but not limited to serving as lead negotiator, managing grievances and arbitration and representing SAG-AFTRA in matters before the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
This section provides a general summary of the most significant job duties performed. It does not explain in detail every single duty performed.
•- Negotiations - Lead Negotiator for all Missouri Valley (MO) based collective bargaining agreements (CBA's).
•- CBA Administration - Responsible for administration of all MO-based CBA's, including but not limited to answering member, non-member and employer inquiries regarding agreements, grievance and arbitration on all claims arising from these CBA's, personal service contracts, H&R and other benefit-related inquiries, Weingarten meetings, membership matters and dues-related inquiries as needed.
•- Broadcast National Coordination - Responsible for coordination with the National Director, News & Broadcast and other staff for all broadcast matters arising out of MO-based CBA's, including but not limited to: Ownership group coordination; providing information and updates related to MO-based broadcast negotiations and/or disputes; special attention to minimum standards on issues of national concern or with group owners; dispute resolution, grievances and arbitrations (with support and approval from Legal); participating in coordinated campaigns, bargaining or approaches to bargaining with employers.
•- Broadcast National Support - May be asked to serve a lead or support in negotiations with employers in other Locals; may be asked to provide CBA administrative support to other Locals engaged in bargaining or other disputes; involves travel to other Locals.
•- Broadcast Organizing - In cooperation with the National Director, News & Broadcast and Organizing, responsible for participating in, coordinating on and/or supporting organizing efforts in broadcast in MO broadcast and/or in connection with group employers with operations in Missouri.
•- Legal - In coordination with Chief Broadcast Officer, General Counsel and National Director, Organizing, responsible for the administering and conducting proceedingsregarding the following: NLRB (RC Elections, decertification, de-authorization, UC petitions, unfair labor practice charges, etc.); Arbitrations, EEO matters; and Legislative policy.
Broadcast Administrative Matters:
•- Provide Notice to Signatory Department of all extensions with copies and/or no extensions in cases where no extension agreement has been reached.
•- Prepare Executive Committee reports - Use appropriate forms and procedures; notice to signatories.
•- Oversee broadcast membership standard practices, including monitoring Local broadcast staff hires, separations, etc.; administering dues check-off and enforcing union security provisions; assisting with member health and welfare benefit questions.
•- Responsible for regular and periodic communications to members, including any Local broadcast publications following National Communications policy where required.
•- Responsible for attending Local broadcast events and public appearances in coordination with Chief Broadcast Officer and Communications where necessary.
Governance:
•- Attend BSC Meetings.
•- Attend Executive Committee, Local and National Board meetings, and present broadcast related matters as needed.
•- Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities and be able to explain and demonstrate that he or she can perform the essential functions of this job with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
•- Ability to inspire and lead staff.
•- Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing; including ability to defend SAG-AFTRA's position orally or in writing to staff, members or outside parties.
•- Able to write clearly, succinctly, and type at least 35 wpm.
•Independent problem solving and analytical skills.
•- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office; familiarity with SAG-AFTRA Oracle systems is a plus.
•- Proficient in PC applications.
•- Preferable, prior experience managing staff in a Union environment.
•- Must be able to work in a very challenging environment where constructive feedback from others is encouraged.
•- Excellent listening skills.
•- Ability to work well with minimum direction.
•- Detail oriented.
•- Capable of taking direction from more than one supervisor.
•- Have an understanding and awareness of worker rights impacting SAG-AFTRA members.
•- Hold yourself and others accountable for a high level of performance and integrity.
•- Demonstrate ability and initiative to take on unanticipated problems and assume responsibilities beyond normal duties.
•- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality of information.
•- Ability to work in a very fast paced, high pressure environment requiring excellent organizational skills.
•- Able to organize, prioritize and coordinate multiple tasks under daily deadlines.
•- Superlative interpersonal skills: high degree of patience and tact. Must be able to cultivate strategic and collaborative relationships internally and externally.
•- Ability to expedite heavy workload efficiently.
•- Demonstrated interpretative and analytic ability.
•- Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such level as is determined at SAG-AFTRA's sole discretion.
•- Must be available and willing to work extended hours per day or per week, including weekends and holidays, as SAG-AFTRA determines is necessary to meet its business needs.
•- Must be available and willing to travel to such locations and with such frequency as SAG-AFTRA determines is necessary or desirable to meet its business needs.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience:
•- Extensive experience (minimum 7+ years) in working with collective bargaining agreements.
•- Juris Doctor from an accredited law school required.
•- Entertainment industry experience preferred, but not required.
Certificates, licenses, and/or registrations:
•- Admission to a state bar.
