Full Time Job
The DME reports directly to the Managing Editor (ME). He or she will work closely with the ME on all matters pertaining to the weekly issue close and the weekly digital rollout. He or she is expected manage and enforce all deadlines to make sure that magazine content is up to standard, on brand, and most importantly, on time.
RESPONSIBILITIES
EDITORIAL
• Manage weekly issue lineups, deadlines and schedules
• Manage book map and shipping schedules
• Set and distribute hourly, daily and weekly deadlines to ensure all pages ship to printer on time
• Enforce all deadlines by checking in with editors and being aware of current status of all pages
• Liaise with all departments (Copy, Editorial, Design, Photo) while coordinating issue close
• Coordinate with Ad Production department; read all edit pages and advertisements for ad/edit and/or ASME conflicts in each issue
• Manage rollout of print content onto digital platforms, set digital schedule for stories, work with editors and designers to optimize print content for the website
• Support ME in long-range planning and maintaining editorial calendar
• Manage workload and priorities for all editors
• Manage freelancer staff
• Keep staff engaged and productive during non-publishing weeks
• Vet, hire and manage editorial interns
QUALIFICATIONS
• Must have prior managing editor experience
• Must possess excellent management, leadership, and interpersonal skills
• Must be able to manage a large team of editors in a high pressure environment
• Must demonstrate ability to multi-task and make quick decisions in a fast-paced newsroom environment
• Must be extremely organized and detail-oriented
• Must be willing to work late hours when needed to ensure deadlines are met
• Must be able to act independently and make quick, educated decisions when dealing with breaking news
• Must have knowledge of and interest in managing editorial content beyond the print product (website, video, etc)
SKILLS
• Proficiency in InCopy, InDesign and K4
• Proficiency in Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Outlook
• Must possess knowledge of print magazine production
• Must possess excellent writing, editing, and communication skills
