Title: Pacific Chorale Academy Teaching Artist: Beginning Vocal/Choral Music - Mariners Site
Hours: Approximately 2 teaching hours + 2 planning/ meeting hours per week 2015-16 Schedule: Teaching schedule: Wednesdays, 1:30-2:30 p.m. and Thursdays, 2:30-3:30 p.m. September - December and January - May Mariners Elementary, Newport Beach

Based on the principals of Venezuela's El Sistema, Pacific Chorale Academy provides access to exceptional choral music education in order to promote youth development. By engaging, encouraging and connecting students, teachers and parents, Pacific Chorale and the Newport-Mesa Unified School District empowers the community to value education, embrace shared responsibility and advocate for the success of each participating child.
PC Academy serves approximately 50 4th through 6th grade students for 2 hours each week. Each participant will have a musical experience focused on cultivating a caring, cooperative and fun community. Musical curriculum will include basic musicianship concepts, rhythmic skills and large/small choral ensemble work. Character building is an integral part of the teaching and learning process. Students come from Mariners elementary school, located in Newport Beach, and join this program voluntarily.
Position Summary: The Teaching Artist is part of a two-person teaching team, collaborating with the regular music teacher from Mariners Elementary. This teaching team will ensure the highest quality beginning choral experience for PC Academy, select repertoire and teaching materials, and support each child holistically. The team will support the program's El Sistema-inspired philosophy and assist in facilitating community and family involvement. As a PC Academy Teaching Artist responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
• Collaborating with PC Academy and Newport-Mesa School faculty to create a shared curriculum, pedagogy and culture inspired by the ideals of El Sistema.
• Team-teaching music fundamentals, including rhythm and basic notation.
• Team-directing an ensemble of 40-50 students, including choosing appropriate repertoire.
• Preparation and communication with music teachers, Program Coordinator, Pacific Chorale Staff, parents and the entire PC Academy team.
• Participating in regular staff meetings.
• Communication and rapport-building with parents and students in the class
• Working with staff and outside professionals to implement, document and evaluate the program.
Qualifications:
• Demonstrated excellent musicianship and artistry as a teacher/performer
• Strong commitment to El Sistema's philosophy of social change through music.
• Strong understanding of standard music pedagogy. Training or certification in Kodaly, Orff, and/ or Dalcroze a plus.
• Experience teaching vocal music to children in a classroom setting required.
• Strong classroom management skills.
• Experience leading and conducting choral ensembles.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
• Interest and ability to be a motivational mentor and role model for students, parents, and peers as an artist, teacher and citizen.
• Bilingual in English and Spanish a plus.
• Piano skills required. Guitar skills a plus.
• Flexibility and creativity to adapt to curriculum goals and ability to work collaboratively.
• Ability to work during program hours as well as additional hours for planning meetings, professional development and scheduled concerts.
• Sense of humor a must!
Note: Teaching Artists will be paid at the specified hourly rate for instructional time, professional development, planning meetings, concerts and special events and other program-related activities, where attendance or participation is required.
