Netflix seeks a seasoned Counsel - Music to join the Music Group, part of the Business & Legal Affairs Team based in Los Angeles. The Music Group has global responsibility for all business and legal affairs issues connected with Netflix's use of music. This encompasses the global production of Netflix Originals (commissioning composers, negotiating licenses with production music libraries, music publishers and record labels), and the distribution of Netflix content to customers all over the world (negotiating and managing licenses with collective management organisations). As a producer of Original series, features, documentaries and stand-up, Netflix is an owner of music and has established its own music publishing company to manage these rights.
This is a unique role in a unique business. At its core is the creation of the commercial and legal strategy for negotiating Netflix's licenses with CMOs in many different countries around the world. This involves working with internal stakeholders, reviewing technical and financial data, and leading the deal process from start to finish. The role also involves advising the business on music issues as and when they affect licensing discussions with studios and other suppliers of film and series content. (This may include negotiating directly with such studios and suppliers). While the emphasis of this role is on the distribution side of the Music Group, it will also require the candidate to work on a variety of projects relating to film/series production, as well as our growing music publishing business. Netflix is driving an innovative global approach to its management and licensing of music rights, and this exciting and challenging role will play an essential part in the implementation of our plans. The successful candidate will join a diverse team of industry experts and will be expected to have a deep curiosity for the ins and outs of music copyright and the entertainment business, together with the drive and determination to make a success of this opportunity.
The desired candidate will have:
• 5 years immersion in structuring, negotiating and drafting music licensing agreements between technology/entertainment companies and CMOs / owners of music rights.
• Strong international experience.
• In-depth knowledge of music copyright and related rights.
• Solid understanding of how copyright and related rights are licensed and managed in the entertainment industry.
• Practical knowledge of the music and technology industries.
• Understanding of the evolving theatrical, SVOD, VOD, TV, syndication and home video landscapes.
• Experience providing in-house support in a technology or music company is highly preferred.
• Prior experience and relationships in the specific area of music copyright.
• A BA/BS degree and at least 5 years of directly relevant experience, including several years experience in content distribution/digital rights management and practical knowledge of the music industry.
• Preferably, the candidate will come directly from an entertainment company (either a traditional media business or a digital media company) with an international component.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and judgment.
• Ability to work effectively cross-functionally, think proactively, and drive results.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work well under pressure with diligence, organization, and minimal supervision.
• Excellent judgment, flexibility, confidence, and a sense of humour.
He or she will handle music contract and copyright related matters as they arise, will likely need to dig into local law and practice in various international territories. He or she should be extremely comfortable working independently, counseling business partners and making decisions that have both legal and business impacts. He or she should ideally have a curiosity for technology, reporting formats and music data. He or she will have an innate ability to maintain organization and focus that fuels his/her effectiveness in successfully juggling multiple projects. The successful candidate will also thrive in an environment that places thoughtful efficiency over process, yet have the ability to work with organizations or institutions who may not hold the same beliefs. If you are this candidate, you love working in an environment where freedom and responsibility are a tenet, and passion, innovation and curiosity are mandates: http://www.slideshare.net/reed2001/culture-1798664. Curiosity is a plus if you seek a role which offers unique opportunities to expand and grow beyond your immediate area of expertise, and to collaborate with colleagues in our domestic and international offices who share your passion for music, copyright and the entertainment industry.
