National Geographic Partners is seeking a Senior Photo Editor for the creation of our core brand photographic content. He/she manages the complex production of assigned magazine projects from conception to publication for print and our digital platforms. He/she generates story ideas, manages photographers in the field, creates and manages budgets, finds outside funding support, and recruits new talent.
Principle Responsibilities:
• Supervise and direct the scope and quality of photographic coverage for core brand photographic projects, both originally produced and/or acquired from outside sources, for print magazine and online platforms.
• Determine story narrative, and develop working outline for photographers.
• Create budget and cost projections for the photographic component of each project.
• Network with outside sources for financial and in-kind support.
• Maintain an ongoing dialogue with photographers and editors at all phases of story development.
• Edit images for interim and final review by Editor in Chief.
• Work with layout, writers, cartographers, art department, pre-press, and online to ensure a cohesive package of elements from conception to publication.
• Supervise a Photo Coordinator/Producer responsible for helping with various tasks related to magazine and online projects.
• Contribute to overall editorial content: generate story ideas; oversee beat team.
• Contribute to our digital platforms: Proof photography blog, News, and social media.
• Recruit new talent.
Qualifications:
Required Skills:
• Bachelor's degree.
• 7 to 10 years experience as a photo editor at editorial publication or equivalent.
• Editorial sensibility, and ability make editorial judgments.
• Great visual taste; extensive knowledge of photography and photographers.
• Strong research skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and problem solve creatively. Computer literacy required including the Macintosh platform. Familiarity with Microsoft Word, iView MediaPro/Expression Media 2, and Adobe Photoshop.
Preferred Skills:
• An interest in or previous experience in the sciences or archeology preferred.
• Graduate degree and ability to speak foreign languages a plus.
• Proven experience working in digital platforms.
