The Associate Editor for National Geographic Traveler manages and edits the magazine's entire front-of-the-book section. He/she assigns all writers, as well as fosters emerging talent. The position collaborates heavily with the photo and design departments, and looks for creative, visual ways to tell a story.
Responsibilities
• Edit and manage all front-of-the-book content for the magazine.
• Curate and conceive front-of-the-book story ideas, and lead and organize all front-of-the-book meetings.
• Source and cultivate freelance writers for our front-of-the-book sections.
• Collaborate with the photo and design departments on all front-of-the-book stories.
• Collaborate with internal and external partners, including Nat Geo Expeditions/Lodges; Nat Geo Books; Nat Geo Travel Digital; and advertisers for sponsored content.
• Write any pages not assigned to freelance writers (i.e. Contents, Masthead, Opener, etc).
• Write front-of-the-book articles as needed.
• Assist feature editors with smaller feature pieces and sidebars. Help brainstorm features and packages.
Qualifications:
• At least three years of relevant work experience required.
• Bachelor's degree required, graduate work or degree in journalism or communications preferred.
• Knowledge of the travel media landscape and the travel experience.
• Experience with editorial layout software, print editorial ideation and content development, hands-on editing, writing, and reporting skills.
