Full Time Job
The Research Editor conducts editorial review of print and digital maps and graphics generated for National Geographic magazines as well as news, travel, books, and retail products. Responsible for maintaining the standards of excellence for which National Geographic maps and graphics are known.
Responsibilities
• Verifies factual information presented in cartographic products (e.g., place names, locations of geographic features, thematic information); researches, gathers, processes, and analyzes large amounts of data from authoritative sources to validate the quality and accuracy of maps and graphics; determines editorial solutions by working cooperatively with editors, writers, photographers, and consultants.
• Cartographic products that meet National Geographic standards for accuracy and authoritativeness.
• Verifies that cartographic products conform to established National Geographic Map Policy and cartographic conventions; develops a deep understanding of NG Map Policy and knows where and how that policy should be applied on maps and graphics, especially around sensitive or controversial issues.
• Cartographic products that are consistent with National Geographic Map Policy and cartographic standards.
• Monitors world events, researches and compiles information that may affect NG Map Policy or the cartographic database (e.g., place name changes, political boundary changes, geopolitical changes related to territorial disputes).
• Recommendations for topics to be considered by the NG Map Policy Committee.
• Research and acquires authoritative data to support cartographic products as needed.
• Research packages to be used by graphics editors.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree preferred.
• At least four years of editorial or research experience.
• Familiarity with National Geographic core topics, such as archaeology, geography, cultures, environment, and natural history.
• Good communication skills, including the ability to concisely explain a problem and to articulate a solution.
• Ability to grasp and critically evaluate new subject matter quickly.
• Familiarity with software and websites used in editorial and research activities (e.g., MS Office, Adobe Creative Suite, ArcGIS, search and index services).
• Sound journalistic judgment and the ability to balance accuracy with compelling narrative and visual storytelling. Curiosity about topics covered in the NGP products. Superior organization and the ability to budget time and handle several tasks simultaneously under the pressure of tight deadlines.
Division Description
National Geographic Partners LLC, a joint venture between National Geographic Society and 21st Century Fox, combines National Geographic television channels with National Geographic's media and consumer-oriented assets, including National Geographic magazines; National Geographic Studios; related digital and social media platforms; books; maps; children's media; and ancillary activities that include travel, location-based entertainment, archival sales, catalog, licensing and e-commerce businesses. A portion of the proceeds from National Geographic Partners LLC will be used to fund science, exploration, conservation and education through significant ongoing contributions to the work of the National Geographic Society.
