The Executive Editor, Kids Books for National Geographic Partners will oversee preschool content for the Kids Media group, including managing and editing children's book projects, and overseeing the National Geographic Little Kids (NGLK) magazine and preschool web content with a keen eye toward the children's marketplace. This position will specialize in setting strategy and overseeing high-profile and big-budget projects, especially those with multi-media/cross platform potential, as well as creative development and ideation. In addition, the Executive Editor will manage a team of editors. This position reports to the Vice President/Editorial Director, Kids Books.
Responsibilities
• Oversee all elements of content for all preschool books, including new series, Look & Learn, First Big Book series, etc., by choosing, assigning and coaching writers to obtain quality text on deadline, and supervising other book team members (editors, researchers, designers, and photo editors) to ensure quality of published material. Edit copy and manage work flow of preschool book teams.
• Provide leadership and vision for all content for National Geographic Little Kids (NGLK) magazine by developing, planning and managing all editorial content, working closely with individual story teams to ensure quality product on deadline, maintaining editorial calendar, and exploring new revenue streams and partnerships for NGLK. The Executive Editor will also develop and maintain an online parents' guide for every issue.
• Oversee online content for NGLK preschool website, generating ideas and creating content that engages a dual parent/preschool audience.
• Maintain expertise in digital preschool trends, and explore new revenue-generating opportunities, including apps and tablet-based experiences.
• Represent NGLK in cross-divisional and outside organizations as the in-house preschool expert.
• Attend relevant workshops and conferences in order to strategize preschool content across all platforms.
• Other duties for various Education and Children's Media projects as assigned.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree required, ideally in English or Journalism.
• Must have at least 10 years experience as a children's media editor, ideally with both magazine and book experience.
• Must be a very skilled communicator and a skilled writer.
• Must have excellent reasoning and basic budgeting skills.
• Must be able to effectively use all basic office/computer programs including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• The successful candidate will bring an exception knowledge of the preschool sector and will have the demonstrated ability to recruit, cultivate, consult, and work with preschool experts.
