The Digital News Director leads and manages editorial planning, assignments, and editing of a robust mix of daily content across our digital platforms, supervising a team of writers and editors and a stable of freelancers and leading day-to-day management and coordination of embedded newsroom staff from other departments, including writers and editors and staff from photo, video and graphics teams. National Geographic's news section and blogs are the content and traffic engines for our digital platforms, and the digital news director is charged with using metrics and rapidly evolving social platforms to grow and more deeply engage the digital audience while ensuring that the quality of our daily content lives up to the high standards of our reputation. Must be comfortable representing the Executive Editor for Digital in meetings and other venues.
Responsibilities
• Leading a team of staff writers/editors and interns and sideways managing the broader newsroom in a fast-paced digital publishing environment.
• Producing a compelling, metrics-driven mix of daily content-stories, photo galleries, blog posts, video-driven pieces, etc.-that grows our global audience and that evolves with the challenges and opportunities of the fast-changing digital space.
• Top editing stories from digital and NGM editors with an eye toward meeting the evolving demands of the digital news space, ensuring our copy includes concise, newsy leads; clear, why-this-matters nut graphs; news-style story format; and compelling, SEO- and socially-optimized headlines.
• Produce content that upholds our high standards while taking best advantage of the dynamic digital space.
• Coordinate with Social team, Communications team and Homepage editors.
• Maximize resonance and distribution of our content, nurturing a broad public conversation around it, and raising the profiles of our writers and editors.
• Provide close coordination with the National Geographic Channel around the major pillars of National Geographic Partners.
• Effectively leveraging stories across broadcast and digital platforms.
• Maintain the budget and manage six-figure freelance and travel budget.
• Effective investments in freelance pieces and travel for stories and professional development.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree is required.
• At least 10 years of experience covering news and leading journalists who are covering global news for a global audience on digital platforms.
• At least 3 years of supervisory experience.

National Geographic Partners LLC, a joint venture between National Geographic Society and 21st Century Fox, combines National Geographic television channels with National Geographic's media and consumer-oriented assets, including National Geographic magazines; National Geographic Studios; related digital and social media platforms; books; maps; children's media; and ancillary activities that include travel, location-based entertainment, archival sales, catalog, licensing and e-commerce businesses. A portion of the proceeds from National Geographic Partners LLC will be used to fund science, exploration, conservation and education through significant ongoing contributions to the work of the National Geographic Society.
