Supervising Producer - All Things Considered
Full Time Job
Responsible for managing daily production of All Things Considered. Key member of senior team who supervises regular and temporary staff, creates and manages work schedules, makes assignments, and sets production deadlines. Works with the Executive Producer and other news managers to develop and implement various program-related objectives, including developing program series, features, and reporting initiatives. Manages personnel issues related to program staff as assigned. Monitors programming and provides critiques.
Essential Duties Include:
• Supervises daily production of All Things Considered.
• Leads daily editorial meeting.
• Reviews story recommendations of hosts, reporters, freelancers and other contributors and makes assignments.
• Oversees program content created by staff by tracking the ongoing flow of news and directing assignments of specific stories and areas of coverage, while maintaining flexibility and working quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure.
• Responsible for developing the final program rundown and giving final approval of daily program content and production.
• Performs union-covered duties as needed, so long as performance of such duties is not, on average, a preponderance of the work performed.
• Provides editorial and production guidance to program hosts, reporters, editors, producers, and production staff.
• Supervises preparation of air material and is responsible for editorial integrity and quality of air product, while maintaining flexibility and working quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure.
• Ensures that all material aired meets NPR programs’ standards and practices, including standards of fairness, objectivity and balance.
• Assists editors to ensure that content is edited for continuity, journalistic integrity, quality of writing, manner of presentation, and consistency of style.
• Provides final approval of scripts when necessary.
• Ensures quality of programming.
• Coordinates and oversees use of production facilities in collaboration with News Operations.
• Works with other news managers to coordinate program coverage with desks and other NPR departments, including Digital Media.
• Regularly furnishes critiques of programs and individual elements, in writing and in personal meetings with hosts and staff.
• Coordinates staff schedules, approves time sheets and maintains other personnel records as needed.
• Assigns overtime and monitors travel expenses, as assigned by the Executive Producer.
• Participates in the hiring process and makes hiring, bonus and pay recommendations to the Executive Producer.
• Prepares performance reviews and development plans for staff members under his or her supervision, as determined by the Executive Producer.
• Retains, assigns work to, and purchases content from independent contractors in accordance with NPR policy.
• Other duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
• At least 8 years of broadcast production experience, with experience in live broadcasts and knowledge of digital audio workstations, including work on:
• Breaking news coverage and daily news coverage, including the generation of story ideas and the research and development of such stories.
• Feature reports, including the development of topics and the organization and presentation of lengthy articles or programs.
• Field production and remote production.
• Considerable knowledge of current events, including international and national news.
• Demonstrated writing ability and considerable skill in news and feature writing, editing and production.
• Ability to handle multiple and complex projects simultaneously under stringent time frames and changing priorities/conditions.
• Experience maintaining high journalistic standards under deadline pressure, including standards of objectivity, balance and fairness.
• Demonstrated skill in oral presentation.
• Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.
• Demonstrated understanding of sound organizational development, management and supervisory principles.
• Ability and willingness to work varied shifts.
• Previous managerial experience.
• Expertise in producing programs under breaking news conditions.
• Thorough knowledge of broadcast writing, editing and audio production.
• Experience producing on digital audio workstations.
• Experience working in and/or knowledge of public radio and the public radio system.
• Ability and willingness to relocate.
