The NPR Training team supports high-quality journalism and storytelling at NPR and member stations. Public media journalists are busier than ever — and their jobs keep evolving. In this environment, it can be difficult to hone storytelling techniques, learn new tools, and find the space and guidance to experiment. The NPR Training Team exists to make all of that happen.
The team is multiplatform and offers training in audio and digital storytelling, audio production, social media, diversity, editing and more. Our training takes many forms: in-person workshops, webinars, visits to member stations and industry conferences.
The team shares best practices and tips on its website, npr.org/training. The site is an open and growing resource that has found new audiences outside of public media, including journalism students and educators, other news organizations and non-profits.
The NPR Training site is a cornerstone of the team’s work, and strong visuals are critical to our continued success, for telling stories visually, illustrating sometimes abstract concepts and making our material more shareable on social media.
The photography intern will focus on two goals:
-- Serve as the primary visual journalist for the training site. This may include covering the team’s in-person training events, photographing journalists in action, or creating photo illustrations for the site.
-- Produce and improve training material on photo storytelling, including best practices, how-to guides and more.
In addition, you will have the opportunity to shadow and learn from NPR’s award-winning visual journalists, including our Tiny Desk and Facebook Live teams.
Who should apply?
The photography intern should have experience in photojournalism, with examples of work. (Bonus points if you’ve done video, social media campaigns or graphic design.)
The NPR Training team is a collaborative unit, and our interns are expected to weigh in on the team’s work and contribute their own ideas. You should be a team player, an organized self-starter, and excited to experiment with new material. You also need strong written and verbal communication skills. Finally, you should be passionate about public media and the power of photography as a medium for telling stories.
