NPR is looking for the next host of its flagship afternoon news program, All Things Considered. Does this sound like you? You are an accomplished journalist who is creative, curious, ambitious and passionate, a masterful storyteller and a strong writer. You have an insatiable appetite for daily news and you have proven ability to conduct engaging conversations about national politics, business, science, arts, culture and more. You have an interest in and understanding of international diplomacy and are able to translate what that means for the NPR listener. Your interest in the military and national security is an added bonus. You are adept at handling live coverage at very short notice, and you are able to hold the air for hours at a time, juggling multiple guests in studio and remotely. You enjoy conducting in-depth interviews with newsmakers from the President and other world leaders to authors, filmmakers and other culture creators. You are a natural leader who is collegial and collaborative and unflappable under pressure.
Responsibilities:
Anchors program.
• Reads widely and extensively including books, magazines, periodicals and websites for program ideas and in preparation for interviews. Proposes specific interviews and conducts two-ways with guests, participants and reporters.
• Writes program billboards and introductory copy.
• Provides continuity between items on program. Writes and delivers introductory material.
• Ad-libs as necessary to provide continuity in live breaking news events.
• Hosts live events and live breaking news coverage.
Participates in the production of the program.
• Participates in program planning meetings, suggesting ideas for the program and possible guests.
• Serves as writer and producer of special segments for program.
• Carries out other assignments as designated.
Serves as a public representative of National Public Radio, Inc.
• Records promotional material for NPR.
• Responds to personal inquiries from listeners to the extent possible.
• Writes digital content as assigned and interacts with online social media audience.
• Makes personal appearances for NPR and member stations as assigned.
Other assignments as directed by the Executive Producer and Vice President for News, or his/her designee.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required:
• At least ten years of journalism experience, including at least three years’ radio experience.
• Proven ability to write for a broadcast audience.
• Well-developed curiosity in a wide range of subjects and a broad range of general news knowledge.
• Demonstrated ability to discuss national and international issues on air in a clear, balanced and intelligent manner.
• Well-developed on-air personality and a strong ability to conduct thoughtful interviews with people who have diverse and opposing opinions, comments and views.
• Ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure. Incumbent must be able to recognize and be ready to anchor breaking stories for major programs.
• Ability and willingness to work varied shifts.
• Ability and willingness to relocate. In the future, NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations. Severance provisions of the AFTRA collective bargaining agreement will apply should you choose not to accept a transfer.
• Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.
Preferred:
• Familiarity with the public radio system.
• Experience working on a national, daily news outlet.
• National name recognition.
• Experience producing on digital audio workstations.
