Overview:
The Executive Producer for Live & Special Events would be responsible for taking the charge in developing and implementing NPR’s 24/7 strategy for live and breaking news coverage. Focused on working across the newsroom and the public radio system, with a mandate to bust silos, encouraging new practices and workflows that enhance our relevance and usefulness to the audience. This role reports directly to the Deputy Managing Editors of Broadcast and Digital.
Essential Duties Include:
• Instigates, coordinates and manages live and special coverage across all platforms, with a focus on broadcast.
• Works (in coordination with DME’s) with news magazines, news gathering desks, Newscast unit, Newsdesk to ensure effective on-air response to breaking news and special coverage events.
• In collaboration with other key stakeholders, develops strategies and protocols that ensure NPR and Member stations respond to breaking news as one network.
• Ensures effective co-ordination and communication with member stations around live and special coverage.
• Develops editorial calendar of potential live events for special coverage, determining priorities in consultation with the DME’s.
• Develops and executes strategy for effective coverage of breaking news outside hours when news magazines are airing.
• Leads live special coverage as appropriate.
• Works with Newscast unit to ensure newscasts are appropriately timely, relevant and useful to the audience.
• Collaborates and coordinates with NPR One and Digital Media to ensure effective breaking news coverage in NPR One and NPR News App.
• Collaborates and coordinates with Digital News and Newsdesk to enhance breaking news coverage on org, as well as social media platforms including Twitter and Facebook.
• Responsible for commissioning, producing and distributing hour-long Specials for air on Member stations; expectation 10 Specials in 2017
• Ensure that all material aired meets NPR standards and practices, including standards of fairness, completeness, independence and impartiality.
• Build editorial connections with NPR Member Station newsrooms.
• Provide feedback and coaching to staff members.
• Have a working and up to date understanding of the program’s performance on Member Stations, the program’s current and potential audiences, and NPR’s competitive environment.
• Regularly lead critical discussions about NPR’s Live & Special Events coverage with Senior News Leadership team.
• Serves as substitute for DME’s as required.
• Assists DME’s and desks with broadcast and digital editing as required.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Required Skills:
• Minimum of 10 years national broadcast journalism experience, in roles of increasing responsibility.
• Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.
• Deep understanding of NPR programming across platforms and commitment to the mission of NPR.
• 7-10 years of experience supervising editors and producers
• Proven editorial skills and judgment.
• Experience maintaining high journalistic standards under deadline pressure, including standards of objectivity, balance and fairness.
• Considerable knowledge of basic and advance principles of broadcast and digital media.
• Candidates are required to have 6 years of experience in increasingly responsible staff positions with directly relevant experience pitching and managing events and talent appearances.
• Established contacts and proven placement success with speaking engagements and event booking and thoughtful coverage of complex issues and situations.
• Outstanding writing, editing, organizational and interpersonal skills; extraordinary attention to detail. Strong decision-making ability. Demonstrated skill in comprehending and analyzing complex issues and situations and providing thoughtful strategy.
• Familiarity with contemporary Communications professional processes, services, technology and ability to articulate them to peers to achieve results.
• Proven excellence in successfully juggling multiple and often high-pressure deadlines.
Preferred Skills:
• Comprehension of NPR policies – including but not limited to NPR News ethics code – and utilization of them for decision-making in all activities.
• Previous experience overseeing work in social media and multimedia preferred.
• Previous experience working within a union environment.
