Overview:
Role Summary:
The Digital Editor III for International News will be responsible for directing digital coverage of international news across platforms, including npr.org’s Parallels blog, mobile and social media. Working closely with NPR’s International Desk, this editor coordinates coverage with other editors and producers and engages reporters and freelance writers to create sophisticated digital content. S/he conceives and edits stories, blog posts and projects and contributes original reporting and writing. The job may require occasional domestic and international travel. This position reports to the Supervising Editor for Digital News and has no direct reports.
Essential Duties Include:
• Plans online coverage of daily news and future stories in coordination with shows and desks.
• Edits original and broadcast-based stories and blog posts on a daily basis, including text, headlines, photographic elements and audio to enhance the presentation.
• Contributes blog posts and original reporting and writing for the digital audience.
• As requested, handles news shifts. Working on deadline and under pressure, writes headlines, teasers and other display copy for all incoming stories.
• Produces and/or creates digital news packages, working with shows and desks to initiate ideas; researches and/or reports and writes stories; identifies and edits photos.
• Assigns, develops and edits original stories from other NPR staff and from freelancers.
• In the case of assigned material to outside talent, manages contract negotiation and filing (with supervision).
• Works with the Visuals team to create multimedia elements, including videos, photo galleries and interactives.
• Determines needs for rights clearances and permissions for acquired material. Acquires and files permissions and clearances.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education: College degree in journalism, international studies or writing-intensive discipline and/or equivalent work experience.
Required Skills:
• Minimum of 8 years of journalism experience, including international news reporting and/or editing.
• At least 3 years of experience in editorial decision-making.
• Proven ability to report, write and edit long-form digital stories.
• Demonstrated skills in editing and headline writing.
• Thorough knowledge of Associated Press style.
• A broad range of general news knowledge.
• Understanding of journalistic ethics. Experience maintaining high journalistic standards under deadline pressure, including standards of objectivity, balance and fairness.
• Willingness to learn skills necessary to work on Digital platforms; ability to adapt to changes in equipment, software and workflow.
• Ability to handle multiple and complex projects simultaneously under tight time frames and changing priorities/conditions.
• Ability to work independently and with members of a cooperative team.
• Ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure.
• Strong oral communication skills.
• Ability and willingness to work varied shifts as needed, including early mornings, nights, weekends and some holidays.
• Ability to occasionally travel.
• Ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.
• Ability to relocate. In the future, NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations. Severance provisions of the SAG-AFTRA collective bargaining agreement will apply should you choose not to accept a transfer.
Preferred Skills:
• Thorough knowledge of online writing and audio production.
• Experience writing and editing under breaking news conditions.
• Experience and skill with Web publishing software.
• Experience producing on digital audio workstations.
