Overview:
NPR is pleased to announce a rare senior-level position in its Office of the General Counsel. The Deputy General Counsel will report directly to NPR’s Chief Legal Officer, will advise NPR management on matters critical to NPR’s mission, and will help manage NPR’s strong legal team. The successful candidate will have at least 15 years’ experience in legal positions of increasing responsibility, whether in-house, in private practice, or in government, as well as a proven ability to manage multiple projects, to set and adjust priorities, to work effectively under pressure, and to maintain composure and a sense of humor while doing so. Outstanding written and oral communications skills and mature judgment are essential. The ideal candidate will be a versatile practitioner with significant experience structuring, negotiating, and drafting complex commercial contracts and counseling clients, including tax-exempt entities, in a fast-paced, competitive industry; interest in and substantive knowledge of copyright, trademark, media, technology, and communications law; experience managing other lawyers and professional and support staff; and a passion for the important work NPR does.

• Advise NPR management on matters critical to NPR’s mission
• Help manage NPR’s strong legal team
Qualifications:
Required:
• At least 15 years of relevant experience
• Outstanding written and oral communication skills
• Experience structuring, negotiating, and drafting complex commercial contracts
• Experience managing a legal department, division, or practice group
• Demonstrated ability to teach and to mentor less experienced colleagues
• Mature judgment
• An orientation toward collaboration and client service; strong client relations skills
• Proven ability to manage multiple projects and to set and adjust priorities
• Proven ability to work under pressure and to maintain a sense of humor while doing so
• Membership in good standing in (or eligibility to waive into) the District of Columbia Bar
Preferred:
• Experience representing media, communications, or technology clients
• Experience in copyright and trademark law
• Experience counselling tax-exempt organizations, regulated entities, or public institutions
• Familiarity with digital technologies and privacy/data security law
• Experience advising and interacting with corporate boards
