Overview:
Role Summary
The Broadcast Applications Specialist provides systems administration for NPR’s automated audio routing systems, consoles, audio presentation platforms, and associated broadcast applications. Additionally, the position will contribute to NPR’s transition from existing audio transport technologies (ISDN, T1, etc.) to audio over IP (AoIP) solutions to interconnect NPR’s domestic and international production facilities, bureaus, and filing locations. These applications and services require careful monitoring, version control, and maintenance to meet the high reliability requirements of a 24x7x365 production environment.
The Broadcast Applications Specialist will provide support for the full suite of broadcast applications, tools, and workflow used at NPR and will regularly engage with team members throughout the Audio Engineering department to offer training and support as needed. While this position is primarily technically focused, some operational duties will also be required. S/he must be available and on-call during off hours and weekends in order to troubleshoot and resolve broadcast and production issues as needed.
This position reports to the Manager, Technical Production Systems.
Essential Duties Include:
• Administers broadcast applications, communication systems, audio routers and work surfaces
• Quickly resolves system issues and outages
• Designs and implements AoIP solutions for interconnection of NPR’s domestic and international production facilities
• Effectively coordinates and communicates cross-divisionally with NPR’s IT team(s)
• Analyzes client requirements and workflow and recommends improvements
• Actively participates in NPR’s ongoing disaster recovery and business continuity planning
• Maintains system documentation and keeps detailed change logs
• Recommends and utilizes best practices for operational staff
• In conjunction with Audio Engineering operational managers, establishes and implements training initiatives that are specific, measurable, and realistic on broadcast systems and applications for NABET staff
• Respond to critical system issues on a 24x7x365 basis
• Participate in an on-call rotation for non-business hours support
• Other duties and responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications:
• Minimum 5 years of experience working directly with audio production, broadcast systems, audio encoding, and live transmissions
• Demonstrable experience with audio console and broadcast automation system design, configuration, and administration
• Experience with network infrastructure
• Knowledgeable of networked audio standards and platforms (AES67, Ravenna, Dante, Livewire, etc.)
Required Skills:
• Technical project planning and design
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively
• Thorough knowledge of digital audio theory and best practices
• Thorough knowledge of broadcast architecture
• Complex trouble shooting and problem solving ability
• Ability to work quickly and efficiently under pressure
• Ability to effectively prioritize tasks and exhibit efficient time management skills
• Proficient with MS Windows, Server, and Microsoft Office suite
• Experience creating detailed systems documentation
• Proven ability to work well in a team environment
• A passion for providing unparalleled client service
Preferred Skills:
• Knowledge of current transmission methods and protocols: IP, ISDN, T1/E3, Streaming (Icecast or Shoutcast a plus), WebRTC, AES67, Ravenna, Livewire, Dante, etc.
• IT networking / Cisco
• Linux proficiency
• Broadcast/Master Control experience
• Familiarity with public radio
• Experience with the Lawo Sapphire/Crystal platforms, networking, and frame structure
• Experience with Virtual Studio Manager (VSM) automation, control, monitoring apps
• Experience with DSA-Volgmann Linescheduler Automation application
• Experience with IP/ISDN codecs (Comrex, Tieline, Musicam, Telos, GatesAir, etc.)
• Supervisory experience and/or team leadership
• Experience in union environment
Education:
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
