Overview:
The NPR Politics Podcast, like NPR’s Washington Desk, focuses on the nexus of politics, policy and culture. Our podcast aims to deliver sophisticated yet accessible coverage of the White House, Congress, the Judiciary, and, of course, electoral politics. We feature big ideas, breaking news and hard facts in a conversational format.
The Assistant/Associate Producer, NPR Politics Podcast will assist in producing program material for The NPR Politics Podcast. The podcast features weekly roundups and quick takes on news of the day from NPR's team of political reporters and editors. The NPR Politics Podcast is one of Time’s 50 Best Podcasts of 2017 and was listed as Podtrac’s #12 podcast for March 2017. The Assistant/Associate Producer will play a critical role in the development and production of each show.
We’re looking for a creative thinker and dexterous producer who can help shape and inspire fresh, engaging political conversations. Excellent news judgment, strong organizational skills and an ambitious news appetite are required, as is the ability to work collaboratively across the network.
The Assistant/Associate Producer will work with the podcast hosts, editors, and other contributors to plan the program and craft the scripts, curating topics and tape for each episode. The job requires attention to detail, big picture thinking, and concern about craft. The ability to multitask and work quickly and effectively on tight deadlines are musts.
Essential Duties Include:
• Podcast Production
• Follow political news closely to outline editorial content for each episode
• Attend to logistical and technical details including booking studios and wrangling talent
• Coordinate and incorporate promotions and underwriting
• Prepare scripts, including writing, background research and tape selection
• Engineer a professional quality roundtable conversation
• Efficient multi-track editing, including mixing music and other elements
• Assist with fact checking
• Oversee final product and posting
• Audience Engagement
• Track and share audience data with editorial team
• Maintain audience engagement by monitoring mailbox and tweets everyday
• Write promotional copy
• Assist with planning and promotion of live shows
• Produce special live NPR Politics Podcast radio broadcasts
• NPR Politics Channel for NPR One Production
• Curate story flow from desk and show content
• Produce original content for NPR One
• Other NPR Politics/Washington desk duties
• Field production
• Assist with breaking news coverage
• Write and produce for NPR.org
• Bargaining unit employees may be given assignments on different platforms, such as multimedia production, including producing Web text, interactive material and multimedia content.
• Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Associate Producer
• At least three years of radio production experience on broadcast digital audio workstations (i.e. MTE/DAVID, Dalet, ProTools or similar)
• At least two years of experience working with daily deadlines
• At least one year of experience in editorial decision-making
• Strong communication skills, both written and oral
• Demonstrated ability to assimilate and organize large amounts of information
• Familiarity with a range of subject areas such as world news, politics, business, science, and arts
• Ability and willingness to work varied shifts
• Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system
• Experience working in and filing from the field
• Understanding of journalistic ethics
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Assistant Producer
• At least 1.5 years’ experience in broadcasting.
• At least 1.5 years’ experience in news journalism.
• Ability to edit audio.
• At least 1.5 years’ journalism-related research, with ability to collect, organize and disseminate information.
• Thorough knowledge of research tools, including computer access data banks.
• Demonstrated writing ability.
• Demonstrated ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure. Ability to handle more than one assignment at a time; ability to prioritize, anticipate and communicate effectively.
• Ability and willingness to work varied shifts.
• Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team.
• Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.
• Ability and willingness to relocate. In the future, NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations. Severance provisions of the AFTRA collective bargaining agreement will apply should you choose not to accept a transfer.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Strong sense of shaping big ideas under daily deadline pressure
• Digital and social media skills
• Experience in radio broadcasting.
• Experience with producing multi-track sonic sequences and editing long-form interview feature segments.
• Digital media skills, including proficiency in social media as a news gathering technique.
• Familiarity with blogging and Web 2.0 functionalities.
• Experience producing in and operating digital audio self-op facilities.
