VP, Business And Legal Affairs (Television)
The Vice President of Business & Legal Affairs serves as a business affairs executive and negotiator for a high-volume television studio that is active in developing, producing and distributing content domestically and internationally. In this role, among many other tasks, the candidate will negotiate and document deals in connection with Miramax's original scripted television programming, including above the line talent deals, network licensing deals, and rights acquisition deals relating to third party IP and distribution rights.
Responsibilities
• Negotiate, draft, issue, and track a high volume of television development and production agreements for scripted television programs and from time to time, feature films projects
• Effectively negotiate and close deals, clearly articulate explanation of deal points, issues, and positions and advise senior management regarding deal structures, production budgets and all other business issues for the studio
• Supervise legal affairs executives and lower level business affairs executives
• Analyze contracts in response to business and client group questions, as well as provide necessary contractual/research information to other department members and Miramax executives (to assist in business development, litigation risk assessment, etc.)
• Oversee outside production counsel services for television programs and feature films produced by Miramax
Requirements
• JD degree and active member of the CA bar
• At least 5-7 years of scripted television experience at a television production company, or a network (broadcast, cable or digital), and some experience at a well-regarded law firm
• Exceptional drafting skills
• Strong relationships with talent representatives and familiarity with customary deal terms and parameters within the scripted television sphere
• Comfort with analyzing issues of copyright, contract, labor and tax law
• Superior negotiation skills with proven ability to think independently and creatively in order to close complex, high level deals quickly and within parameters
• A team player and business minded executive who possesses good common sense and judgment, strong interpersonal skills and a desire to thrive in a fast paced business environment
• Deadline driven, with the ability to organize and prioritize a heavy work load
• Familiarity with a wide variety of deal templates and the ability to be comfortable in a changing business environment
• Ability to work closely with internal finance, production and creative executives
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills which will enable him/her to interact with a range of personalities and styles and be able to establish effective relationships at all levels of the organization
