Method Studios is currently in search of a Shader Writer to join its look-development team.
Primary focus of the position will be in live action and photo-real imaging.
Shading Technical Directors work closely with the Lookdev, Lighting and Effects Departments to develop the rendering tools for these departments. Shading TDs design and write photorealistic shaders. These shaders can be written for a number of different renderers, such as Arnold, RenderMan, Mental Ray and Mantra. This requires a keen aesthetic eye and a deep technical understanding of 3d rendering and shader writing.
Shading TDs also write tools to facilitate different lighting and rendering techniques, such as HDRI, SSS and Global Illumination, ensuring shots can be delivered at the very highest standard. TDs must have a strong knowledge of layer management, as well as a thorough understanding of the AOVs/frame buffers that the Compositing Department may need. Experience writing tools for Katana would be a definite advantage.
Responsibilities and Duties
• Provides aesthetic and technical guidance for all areas of production shading.
• Designs and writes shaders under the aesthetic direction of the Visual Effects Supervisor and CG Supervisor.
• Provide shader support to the lighting and effects teams throughout production.
• Works with Digital Supervisors and R&D to ensure all shaders are optimized and production ready and fit into studio standards and conventions.
• Develops tools to optimize texturing, shading and lighting workflow and pipeline.
• Craft and update documentation for these tools, techniques and work flows.
• Thorough understanding of techniques and technologies relating to shading, lighting and rendering, with a show reel to back this up.
• Continue to remain informed of new shading and lighting technologies.Qualifications
• minimum 5 years experience as a Shading Technical Director or Compositor in Feature film/broadcast VFX production
• solid experience using Prman and arnold software
• bachelors degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Motion Graphics or equivalent work experience.
• ability to balance technical and aesthetic concerns in creating art direct-able, photorealistic shaders.
• experience writing surface, light, displacement and volume shaders for Arnold, RenderMan, Mental Ray and/or Mantra is essential. Also, a strong understanding of procedural shading is required
• practical knowledge of Python required, knowledge of PyQt a plus
• experience with hardware shading languages is also a plus
• strong working knowledge of a production-level pipeline a necessity
• working experience with one or more professional graphics packages, including Katana, Maya, Houdini, and Nuke
• proficiency in one or more professional graphics package
• Python/C APIs, including the Maya SDK, HDK, Nuke SDK, Mental Ray SDK, Prman and Mental Ray SDK preferred
