Sound/Light Technician - Job Description - KIDS from Wisconsin
The Kids from Wisconsin is a non-profit, self-supporting organization sponsored by InPro Corporation and the Wisconsin State Fair. Founded in 1969, the KIDS musical revue is presented at up to 65 shows every summer across Wisconsin, the Midwest, and the continent. The KIDS are featured daily at the Wisconsin State Fair, and have earned a national reputation as a unique and highly professional performing group. Made up of 33 performers age 15-20 (singers, dancers, and instrumentalists), the KIDS affords young people an unforgettable musical experience as entertainers and ambassadors for Wisconsin.
Beginning with a 17 day Show Camp in early June, the KIDS tour for 9-10 weeks during the summer, ending their season by the end of August.

The Sound and Light Technician for the Kids from Wisconsin is a full-time contract position, running for approximately 12 weeks in the summer, serving at the direction of the Producer. The Sound and Light Tech is one of five touring staff positions. Review, assessment, and contract renewal will come from the Producer.
The principal duty of the Sound/Light Tech is to help the Technical Director and/or Assistant Tech Director manage the technical aspects of a live, touring show. This two person technical staff is responsible for more than just mixing the sound of the show. Maintenance of all the stage and sound equipment accounts for a large portion of the tech staff's workload and responsibilities. Additionally, anything related to the logistics of maintaining the tour and the show can fall on the shoulders of the technical staff. Flexibility and adaptability are a must, as are physical stamina and a strong work ethic.
The position begins on or about the Monday before the opening day of the KIDS Show Camp and continues till the end of August (approximately June 1 - August 23, 2015).

Performance sites are most often high school auditoriums and gymnasiums. Professional theaters, county fair grandstands, community amphitheaters, and small football stadiums round out the list of performance sites. Of special note is an 11-day run at the Wisconsin State Fair where the KIDS perform twice daily at the Bank Mutual Amphitheater, a 1600-seat outdoor venue. Versatility and adaptability is required of the entire cast and crew while on tour, and is of extreme importance to the success of the show. The highest degree of professionalism is expected of everyone connected with the KIDS organization at all times.
The musical content of the 2-hour show consists of Broadway revue style production numbers and stage band features. Costume changes, hand props and the music itself keep the fast-paced show moving. Twenty handheld wireless mics are assigned to individual singer/dancers. These assignments change only slightly during the show. The 13-piece stage band totals 24 channels on the board, including wireless clip-on mics for 7 horns, and wireless bass and guitar. The KIDS own their own sound system and stage equipment, with a state-of-the art digital board new in 2010. A basic lighting plot is developed for each summer show prior to the start of tour. The lighting plot may be altered slightly to accommodate specific venues, but otherwise remains consistent. Each KID is assigned a specific equipment set up and tear down task. Load in, set up and sound check usually takes about 90 minutes.
The tour staff consists of a Tour Director/Stage Band Director, Technical Director, Assistant Technical Director, Sound/Light Tech, and Tour Administrator. The KIDS Producer also travels with the group for selected tours. The group travels on a bus or coach, depending on distance. Equipment is transported in a 24' rental truck.
The youth dorm at State Fair is normally available for lodging for any KID or staff member, although food service ends with the last day of the 17-day Show Camp. If a KID chooses to stay in the dorm during an overnight in Milwaukee, at least one staff member stays as well. This responsibility is normally rotated among the tour staff. If none of the KIDS members stay in the dorm, the staff is free to arrange personal lodging anywhere in the Milwaukee area and is considered ''off duty.''
Due to the unique schedule created by touring, there is not a regular day off. Show Camp, in particular, is 17 continuous days. Every effort is made to give KIDS and staff one day off per week during tour, but it is not unusual for the technical staff to have work to do, such as repairs, on days off. Open days are normally days off, unless there are special projects or repairs to be completed between shows. Please refer to last year's tour schedule for a sense of the summer's schedule.
