KQED is hiring a new Digital Communications Intern to extend the efforts of the broadcast series ''Film School Shorts'' by assisting with ongoing digital marketing and communications projects, providing constructive insight and input into online strategy, as well as handling day-to-day requests within KQED Presents and on the local production ''Truly CA.''
''Film School Shorts'' is a national half-hour weekly series that showcases short student films from across the country. Featured are the best short films from major institutions like NYU, Columbia University, UCLA, USC and University of Texas that have wowed audiences at Cannes, Sundance, Toronto, Telluride and SXSW.
''Truly CA'' is the Emmy-award winning local series, currently in its ninth season, featuring the best independent documentaries about California. From San Francisco's 90's punk scene to a look at the transformation of the Mojave Desert's Salton Sea from popular resort to an ecological disaster, ''Truly CA'' brings to life true stories from around the Golden State.
Internship Duties:
-Works alongside the Digital Communications Specialist to increase the reach and online engagement of ''Film School Shorts'' (local and national audience) and ''Truly CA'' (local audience)
-Helps write copy (web, social media and promotional) as assigned, as well as helps write member guide articles.
-Researches the following: current indie film/short film/documentary trends; media influencers; film organizations; film school programs; university-produced content.
-Assists in creating, distributing and maintaining social media toolkits.
-Helps identify groups and individuals to partner for specific programming and online content, both locally and nationally (including bloggers/vloggers, notable individuals in the media, film/TV organizations, and academia).
-Assists in developing and scheduling social media messages, administering posts, running analytics and helping develop social media/online strategies.
-Attends meetings and reports on current projects, as well as offers insight and input for online strategy.
-Creates and logs Facebook Ads.
-Creates optimized images (JPEGs/PNGs) for social media covers, posts and albums, including the addition of basic text and graphics.
-Uploads videos to KQED online properties via YouTube and PBS Video.
-Creates original social content (memes, Vines, GIFs).
-Assists in researching, writing and editing content for KQED Pressroom web pages, including those for ''Film School Shorts'' and of other KQED Presents properties
-Runs carriage reports to help identify and target maximized social media posts to relevant markets.
-Makes cold phone calls and writes introductory emails to potential partners, featured filmmakers and member stations, as well as following up as requested.
-Assists in cross-promotional efforts, helping create synergy with other departments throughout KQED.
Internship Qualifications:
-Academically studying, experienced and/or interested in: digital marketing and communications, social media, interactive media and blogging
-Strong interest and genuine passion for independent film, particularly short films (fiction, animation) and feature length documentaries.
-Eagerness to stay on top of what online topics, videos and articles are new/viral/trending.
-Strong understanding of social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Tumblr, YouTube) and how to use them to engage with users. Experience with TweetDeck and/or scheduling content on social media a plus.YouTube) and how to use them to engage with users. Experience with TweetDeck and/or scheduling content on social media a plus.
-Basic understanding of online database platforms, such as IMDB and Wikipedia.
-Strong online research skills.
-Comfortable reaching out to filmmakers, media organizations, universities, bloggers/vloggers.
-Experience with Microsoft Office, Windows and Mac OS platforms. WordPress and/or blogging experience a plus.
-Basic video/image/audio editing skills and basic understanding of video codecs a plus.
-Excellent oral, written and online communication skills.
-Ability to work independently on tight deadlines and to balance multiple assignments.
