SUMMARY:
Reporting to the EVP, Broadcast Operations and Engineering, this person oversees day to day technical and business operations of the Station Group and Affiliate Operations. Ensure ION has a high quality, consistent transmission in each DMA and a distribution platform that conforms to or exceeds FCC and company requirements. Lead and oversee the development of Station Engineering Management Teams.
Direct reports include Regional Directors of Engineering, Regional Operations Managers and Affiliate Broadcast Specialist. Oversees an employee population of approximately 190 people in 60 Stations across the United States.
Based in Clearwater Florida with extensive travel.
JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Direct, manage, develop and mentor the engineering and operations team to ensure their managerial and operational skills support and facilitate an open, collaborative and high performance environment; lead the team in successfully developing and implementing a talent strategy to meet current and future business needs
•Monitor, analyze and oversee annual Site Inspection Checklist for all stations.
•Responsible for achieving and maintaining a high level of technical compliance
•Oversee and manage all compliance requirements at stations.
•Partner with SVP Marketing on Standard and Practices
•Prepare and maintain operational department budgets, forecasts, plans and reports. Develop and manage capital budgets and justifications; partner with Finance to develop budgets, track costs, and provide pre-estimates and post-estimates as requested
•Manage overall flow and process of lease negotiations in partnership with Corporate Legal (i.e. real estate, towers, microwaves STL's)
•Develop and roll out station cross-training program of Chief Engineers and Station Operations Managers on all matters.
•Work closely with other departments (Broadcast Integrators, Network Operations, Distribution, Quality Assurance and Corporate Finance and Administration) to provide ongoing information and station data.
•Oversee the maintenance and repair of all technical equipment in studio and transmitter facilities/towers, satellite downlink and microwave transmissions systems.
•Responsible for the design and construction of new engineering projects
•Oversee the project management studio moves, new installations, dish overhauls, dish heater installs, equipment roll-outs, etc.
•Conduct performance appraisals and ensure top talent retention.
EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIRED:
•Bachelors degree in a related technical discipline or the equivalent combination of education, technical certifications, training or work experience
•10+ years experience of television operations management and maintaining modern broadcast equipment
•8+ years of managerial experience to include performance and career management, and employee relations; solid experience overseeing (indirect reporting relationships) teams consisting of 20+ regular full-time staff
•Proven ability to build strong partnerships across the organization, lead and manage groups through change and growth, and develop and manage a diverse workforce
•Excellent verbal and written communications skills
•Knowledge of television production, editing, engineering, satellite transmission and distribution systems required
•Knowledge of FCC rules and regulations, applicable electrical, mechanical, structural and civil engineering methods required.
•Successful track record of managing up and across, and developing a strong business case for proposed changes; a business savvy professional
•Solid ability to balance production needs with operational capabilities, and to provide solutions that address and balance both wherever applicable
•Solid experience with process improvement, and identifying and leading operational changes for a TV network's broadcast operations and production facilities
•Strong working knowledge of broadcast technology and operational workflows
•Must be detail-oriented and have excellent problem solving skills
•Must have a track record of success working in a fast-paced, loosely structured environment which requires a hands-on work ethic
•Highly effective management skills and strong leadership presence necessary to operate in a high-pressure, dynamic on-air operations environment
•Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.
EXPERIENCE/SKILLS PREFERRED:
•RF engineering knowledge a plus.
•FCC license and/or SBE certification a plus.
•Practical knowledge of electrical, plumbing, HVAC and basic construction techniques helpful.
