Assistant editors aid the lead editor and director in collection and organization of all the elements needed to edit the project. When editing is finished, they oversee the various lists and instructions necessary to put the piece into its final form. The AE may do a small bit of picture editing as well, if necessary. The AE will have set tasks, usually helping the lead editor when necessary to complete the many time sensitive tasks at hand.
When a project is shot, every piece of picture or sound is coded with numbers and time codes. It the AE’s job to keep track of these digital elements in Final Cut Pro of Avid. The AE needs to be very organized and fluent with non-linear editors and the Mac OS X operating system. The editor and director cut the film using digital copies of the original film and sound, commonly referred to as an “offline” edit. When the cut is locked and has been color graded and back from sound edit, it is the AE’s job to bring the project “online”. They create lists and instructions that tell the picture and sound editors how to put the edit back together with any VFX shots and the high quality original elements.
Greenhouse’s Assistant Editor Internship will help teach you the post-production pipeline with a hands-on mentality from ingest to final output and help prepare you for a career in the post-production world. |
