F/T Writer/Researcher Wanted for YouTube Channel
Fine Brothers Entertainment is looking for a smart, resourceful, personable & dedicated person to join our company full-time as a Writer/Researcher. We're growing by leaps and bounds this year and need to add another member to our team to help research topics and write questions & fact copy for our crazy successful online React series.
This is a position that will be responsible for becoming the office expert on various topics and videos we may decide to cover on our shows, as well as drafting potential questions to ask talent about the subject, and painstakingly researching interesting facts to present on-screen during the episode. You would primarily be working on your own and reporting only to Producers. You should feel very comfortable in the YouTube space, be able to name 9 out of 10 popular advice animal memes, and be almost suspiciously enthusiastic about diving in and figuring out everything there is to know about topics you would never be caught dead researching on your own time. Ok, that's a little cynical, but hopefully you get the gist.
Why Should I Apply?
Our company has been a pioneer in the digital space for 10 years, recently expanding offices and moving our 25+ full-time employees to Burbank. If you're not familiar with who we are, check out our main channel ''TheFineBros''. This channel alone has over 11 million subscribers, and well over 2 billion views so far. Oh, and our first TV show just premiered on Nickelodeon.
In other words, our incredibly talented team of writers, assistants, editors & producers are continually producing solid tv-quality content online already; now it's your turn to help us grow even faster.
The Gritty Details:
This position is full-time in house on-site in Burbank. Our work weeks are Sunday through Thursday and start at 9am (until 7pm usually). On the upside, there is an hour lunch in there somewhere where you can peace out and collect your thoughts. Oh, and we have a bunch of old gaming consoles, so if you want to spend your lunch break playing Mario Kart (N64 or Wii U), that's around. Other than that, the benefits are slim. We have a filtered water cooler and lots of snacks from Costco around. That's pretty neat.
Job Responsibilities:
- Research potential video topics inside and out, we are talking about DEEP DIVING here (8th page of Google deep-diving)
- Be comfortable working on your own, and self-motivated enough to hit your deadlines
- Draft potential questions to ask talent about that topic
- Draft fact copy for our main React series
- Vet and verify all fact copy for 100% accuracy
- Research popular online trends, viral videos and video game content on YouTube
- Learn to pitch show topics based on appropriate supporting historical/cultural context
- Basically become a walking Wikipedia for any topic thrown your way
The Expectations:
You must love writing, but not be annoyed by the legwork required to thoroughly research a topic. There is a definite reason why this position is titled Writer/Researcher, as there is significant time spent on each side of that role. You could easily lose the majority of your day down a rabbit-hole researching K-Pop bands and translating quotes from Korean websites before you even began to write one word of a potential question or fact. At the same time, you must carry the journalistic integrity of someone writing for the New York Times.
We pride ourselves on our sourcing and fact verification, and you must be able to sniff out a questionable statistic, as well as find creative ways to phrase what you know and what you don't know with 100% honesty. You must be comfortable working under tight deadlines and know how to troubleshoot issues on the fly without silently staring like a deer in the headlights at your monitor until someone asks you what's wrong. In general, making the same mistake twice is a huge bummer for us.
Additionally, you should understand this is not a narrative creative writing gig, nor are we looking for someone to pitch us their own scripts. Our production slate is packed, and this role would be very much dedicated to the research & fact writing world for the foreseeable future. Finally, to be considered for this role you should:
- Be funny
- Have reliable transportation to and from our offices in Burbank
- Be familiar with YouTube and the YouTube community
- Have friends or significant others that don't mind you spending long hours away from home
- Be able to adapt your writing voice based on whatever series you may be working on
- Be fluent on Mac OS X & basic Mac software
- Thorough knowledge of Google Apps and Google Drive (sheets, docs, slides, etc) and Microsoft applications
- Have a great sense of humor, and be fun to work around for 12+ hours at a time when needed
The Compensation:
For total transparency, you should know before applying that we are a start-up company. This means that although we have been growing strongly, we are not in a position where we can compete financially with the major networks or studios. You must have a passion to work with creative minds and the new media space to be happy working here with our incredible team. Your words and questions will be seen and heard by MILLIONS of people every week… that's pretty crazy… so hopefully that helps motivate you. If this would just be a stepping stone for you to something else a few months down the line, or what you really want to do is act or direct... this probably isn't the right gig for you. We're looking for people that want to learn and grow with us. That being said, please send your salary requirements in your email to us to be considered.
Extra Credit:
Finally, if you want to stand out from the competition, make sure the first line of your email includes your favorite genre of music, and include your Top 3 favorite YouTubers somewhere in your body text before you sign off (and possibly be prepared to defend your choices should you be interviewed). That's about it. Additionally, please include job code: FBEWR15 in your second line. Thanks for reading this post this far. Good luck!
