POSITION DESCRIPTION
The business affairs manager assists the business affairs team, primarily by providing support for the company's acquisition and distribution of content. As a junior member of the team, the business affairs manager is responsible for tracking deals from initial stages through closing, ensuring a timely, organized and efficient process. He/she is responsible for scheduling and coordinating follow-up, negotiating basic terms of form agreements, and working with sales and acquisitions staff using internal agreement templates. The company in general, and the business affairs department in particular, uses technology to meet its objectives as efficiently as possible. The ideal candidate for this role is tech-savvy and highly organized.
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
• Support contract lifecycle for deals in process. Follow up on pending conversations and assist with closing agreements. Maintain and update shared drives to ensure executed agreements and associated documentation are on file.
• Draft basic agreements related to the company's acquisition and sales of content, marketing initiatives, and operations. Prepare, organize and deliver related documentation. Coordinate asset delivery and assist operations team with delivery lists and timelines.
• Update deal-tracking system to monitor contracting process. Manage entries to rights management system.
• Respond to day-to-day inquiries and source answers from relevant internal teams. Prepare and review correspondence, and assist with preparation of presentations and other documentation as needed.
• Assist the company's counsel with rights and clearance issues, insurance, guild issues, and compliance with advertising and promotional guidelines.
• Leverage technologies to speed routine processes, including workflow automation through macros and scripts.
• Perform research on the industry in general, prospective partners, counterparties, etc. Understand market dynamics, monitor marketplace events and report to management.
• Keep abreast of legislation, legal opinions, and regulatory issues that may affect the industry or the company.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor's degree from a top-tier university with excellent academic credentials and two years of post-collegiate work experience. A JD is not required as this is not a legal position.
• Outstanding writing skills. This is an absolute requirement. Applicants are encouraged to submit a writing sample to demonstrate writing skills. Prior drafting experience is a plus, but not required.
• Proven negotiation skills with preference given to prior experience in licensing. Working knowledge of key issues in the entertainment business, with particular emphasis on digital content and technology initiatives. Basic understanding of film and television distribution a plus.
• Experience working in the entertainment industry, advertising, and/or an agency environment is a plus. Experience working with legal agreements a plus, but not required.
• Discretion is a must. This role requires a high level of confidentiality in all communications.
• Proven ability to manage frequently changing priorities and tasks in a calm and systematic manner. Ability to work effectively, independently and reliably in a fast-paced environment. Strong work ethic, upbeat temperament, dynamic personality and highly team-oriented approach to work.
• Strong client relations skills, business sense, and the ability to make practical evaluations of risk.
• True, demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint.
